Responsibilities

FERC's role is to oversee various aspects of the energy industry, including transmission of electricity, natural gas and oil. We also analyze proposals to build liquefied natural gas terminals and interstate natural gas pipelines and license hydropower projects. This position is located within the Office of Administrative Law Judges (OALJ). The OALJ is charged with resolving cases set forth for hearing concerning natural gas, oil, electric, and hydroelectric matters, and for doing so in a manner which is consistent with the public interest, protects customers, and promotes competitive markets.

Major duties for the position include:
  • Communicates effectively orally using appropriate language, and organizing and conveying facts and ideas clearly, concisely, and objectively.
  • Communicates effectively in writing, using appropriate language, and organizing and conveying facts and ideas clearly, concisely, and objectively.
  • Produces various written documents utilizing a personal computer with advanced functions and several types of office automation software for issuance to the public.
  • Performs research and compiles data and other material, which may be required by the Judge. Effectively utilizes Commission tracking systems to conduct analysis in cases pending before the judges.

Qualifications

For the GS-7 level: one full year (52 weeks) or more of specialized experience equivalent in responsibility and scope at the GS-5 level as described below OR possess 1 year of graduate level education OR must meet Superior Academic Achievement provisions OR must possess a combination of post high school education and experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

Specialized Experience: Experience providing administrative support activities which include skill in proofreading, filing, preparing routine correspondence, and tracking day-to-day information; knowledge of computer software, especially Microsoft Word and good grammar skills; the ability to work independently and as part of a team; and experience in preparing training/travel documents using available software.

Education

Recent graduates who have completed, within the previous two years, a qualifying ( bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate ) from a qualifying educational institution. Veterans unable to apply within two years of receiving their degree, due to military service obligation, have as many as six years after degree completion to apply.
