Research Technician

The George Mason University, National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases (NCBID) in the College of Science invites highly-qualified candidates to apply for our Research Technician position. NCBID faculty are leaders in the areas of biotechnology, biodefense, and the life sciences. They focus on developing broad spectrum drugs against biodefense pathogens and the treatment of newly emerging or re-emerging infectious diseases. The work is supported by students and scientific staff in laboratories housed on the Science and Technology Campus in Manassas, VA. The NCBID oversees and operates the Biomedical Research Laboratory (BRL) which contains BSL-2 and 3 laboratories for the development of techniques and products for detection, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases that result from biological terrorism or arise naturally.

Responsibilities: The primary duties of the position are to manage and perform multiple studies with BSL-2 and BSL-3 organisms and relevant animal models. The incumbent will assist principle scientists in a virology laboratory or will independently perform laboratory experiments by organizing and conducting complex procedures with minimal supervision. These studies support several publications and grant submissions to the National Institutes of Health and other funding agencies. The incumbent will prepare biological agents for testing, collect and analyze data, assist with inventory, order supplies, and evaluate equipment. The incumbent will be expected to occasionally work on weekends and/or after hours for 2 hour shifts during established experimental time points as outlined in the experimental design. This is a restricted position with a large portion of the funding provided by outside projects (grants, contracts, etc.).

Required Qualifications: * Completion of a Master's degree in the biological sciences or equivalent life experience in biological sciences; * A working background in infectious disease research; * Proven ability to problem solve, meet required deadlines, maintain organized records and provide excellent customer service; * Experience with molecular and biochemical techniques such as cell-based assays, Western blotting, viral infections, plasmid transformations and transfections; * Ability to develop laboratory protocols and standard operating procedures; * Familiarity with the acceptable methods and restrictions regarding in vivo experimentation; * Detail-oriented, conscientious, and motivated with strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; * Comprehensive experience with a variety of computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and the internet; * Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting; * Ability to complete work in a timely manner with minimum supervision; * Ability to safely and independently move up to 50 pounds; * Applicant must be eligible to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications: * Prior experience working with traditional cell culture models, viral infections, viral quantification methodologies and PCR approaches.

This position is full time with benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year and subject to annual renewal based on performance and the availability of funding.

Because of the nature of the research conducted, employees working in this facility have special conditions to remain employed. These include, but are not limited to, successful completion of background investigations, drug and alcohol screenings, attending required biosafety trainings, participating in the medical surveillance program and receiving preventative vaccinations as required, and continuous adherence to all policies and procedures.
