The Antitrust Division has an opening for a Supervisory Paralegal Specialist to join its dedicated team and gain invaluable experience working in the public interest to protect the competitive process.

Responsibilities

As a Supervisory Paralegal Specialist in the Paralegal Unit, assigned to a specific section, responsibilities will include:
  • Providing administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the office;
  • Establishing policy for subordinates and communicates policies and priorities;
  • Establishing guidelines and performance expectations for staff members, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system;
  • Providing administrative advice and assistance relative to paralegal duties in decisions affecting the overall operation of the office;
  • Assisting attorneys in conducting interviews with investigative sources and prospective witnesses;
  • Helping prepare witnesses for depositions and legal proceedings;
  • Establishing and maintaining an organized system for controlling subject matter, witness and document files, and all material to be used as exhibits at grand jury sessions, depositions and trials, e.g., lists, tables, indexes to correlate exhibits and transcripts; selects, assembles, summarizes and compiles substantive information by use of statutes, regulations, department orders, digests, commentaries, legal instruments, and other legal reference material;
  • Preparing written products such as routine correspondence, immunity requests, requests for FBI assistance, and factual memoranda;
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • This is a supervisory appointment, subject to a one-year probationary period in accordance with 5 CFR 315.901-909; and may be subject to a one-year supervisory probationary period.
  • The Antitrust Division participates in the E-Verify program.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level. The experience must be evident in your resume. OR a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.M., if related.

Specialized experience at the GS-9 grade level is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. This experience must include: performing factual research to supply information for inclusion in memoranda, briefs and similar legal documents; taking accurate and detailed notes during attorney proffers and witness interviews and preparing memoranda from those notes; coding electronic documents and categorizing hard copy documents in accordance with case priorities, using document review platforms; assisting with the preparation and organization of document review databases; organizing and maintaining tracking logs for case-related material; preparing and organizing charts, graphs, and other materials to be used as exhibits in court; appearing in federal court or before grand juries to testify as witness, concerning exhibits prepared to support the case.

To qualify at the GS-12 grade level you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. The experience must be evident in your resume.

Specialized experience at the GS-11 grade level is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. This experience must include: experience as a team leader, monitoring the status and progress of work assigned to staff; demonstrated ability to identify, distribute, and balance workload and task among employees in accordance with established workflow, skill level, and/or occupational specialization; resolving simple, informal complaints of employees and referring others, such as formal grievances and appeals, to an appropriate management official; training and providing guidance to staff paralegals in office procedures, researching and writing, pre-trial and trial duties; preparing for and conducting interviews with investigative sources and prospective witnesses; drafting memorandum reflecting facts, sources, citations discovered during the course of legal research or witness interview; performing preliminary screening of substantive materials prior to review by attorneys.
