Responsibilities

As a GEOGRAPHER within the VIRGINIA AND WEST VIRGINIA WATER SCIENCE CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:
  • Development of geospatial web applications on CBP partnership web sites and products to support a large, multi-state watershed program aimed at the restoration and protection of coastal and estuarine resources.
  • Serves as the web geographic information system (GIS) senior expert for the CBP.
  • Conducts complex spatial data analyses and provides application and management oriented products that support CBP goals, outcomes, strategies and related initiatives.
  • Develops the technical design and implementation of distributed networked spatial data bases and geospatial web applications necessary for ensuring the CBP partners and stakeholders have efficient, direct internet access to the Chesapeake Bay region environmental spatial data and information.
  • Synthesizes and analyzes a wide variety of established geographic data for web-based communication products.

    • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.     Qualifications

    BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geographer, all grade levels.
    A. Degree in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

    B. A combination of education and experience-- courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semesters hours in geography or related fields, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.     For GS-13:

    In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-13 level:

    **One year of appropriate professional experience in geography that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: 1) serving as a recognized expert on the location and nomenclature of all physical and human features regarded as significant for navigational, intelligence, logistic and general geographical use; 2) responsibility for a comprehensive descriptive study of significant geographical aspects of a major nation state, e.g. Brazil, involving the bringing together of numerous available facts and their presentation; 3) publication of papers dealing with problems, findings, or determinations which are recognized as having considerable significance in the field; 4) performing analytical and interpretive assignments of considerable significance and complexity; 5) designing and creating GIS databases. For examples 1-5, the work involved collaborating with superiors in planning future projects and making recommendations as to the feasibility of proposed projects and the necessity for new phases of existing projects. Apart from program policy, formal guidelines did not exist.
