Job Description Job Number: R0090556 HF Communications Engineer Key Role: Develop electronic systems and components to use within equipment or machinery; support other engineers to perform tasks, when necessary. Apply knowledge of HF and RF communications to support the Army's Science and Technology effort focused on High Frequency (HF) Modernization. Apply consulting or technical expertise as well as full industry knowledge. Conduct both field and lab work for the HF Modernization effort. Install, connect, model and test HF antennas. Develop innovative solutions to complex problems. Work without considerable direction and mentor and supervise team members. Basic Qualifications: * 5+ years experience in working with HF Communications or Software Defined Radios * Experience with HF field work, including erecting antennas or connecting equipment * Experience with HF test equipment - Vector Network Analyzers (VNAs), Portable VNA - FieldFox, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and power meters * Experience in working with S11, S21, Smith Charts, VSWR, Mismatch Loss, and Realized Gain * Knowledge of phased arrays of antennas and beamforming techniques * Knowledge of the types of HF antennas and how they work, including dipole, monopole, folded dipole, log periodic, Yagi, and loops * Knowledge of HF propagation, including ionospheric skywave paths, Near Vertical Incidence Service (NVIS), groundwave, and irregular terrain * Knowledge of HF transceivers, linear power amplifiers, couplers, coaxial cables, and RF connectors * Ability to obtain a security clearance * BA or BS degree or 10+ years of experience in working with HF Communications or Software Defined Radios Additional Qualifications: * Experience with amateur radios, including General or Amateur Extra radio licenses in HF bands * Experience with Army vehicular and airborne HF radios, including the PRC-150 or PRC-160 radios and antennas and associated hardware * Experience with antenna modeling of HF antennas and platforms * Experience with programming radios using CPA language * Experience with propagation prediction software, such as VOACAP * Knowledge of ionospheric diagnostics, such as digisondes, solar conditions, and geomagnetic effects * Knowledge of HF noise models and signal-to-noise path link analysis * Knowledge of HF digital signal processing with an emphasis on MIL STD waveforms and digital modems * Secret clearance preferred * MA or MS degree preferred Clearance: Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
