The National Museum of African American History and Culture's primary purposes are to acquire, maintain and preserve objects which document social, cultural, political, military, technological and scientific developments in the United States related to the African American experience; to conduct research in the field of African American history, to publish findings for all audiences; and interpret historical developments through public exhibits and programs as well as digital content.

Responsibilities

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) has different centers within the Museum that provide an innovative approach to community outreach and engagement, providing opportunities to expand on topics beyond the Museum's permanent exhibitions. The Centers also enable the Museum to reach global audiences through increased digital access to our collection, research, and scholarly work. The Center for the Study of Global Slavery (CSGS) reveals the scope and international impact of the historical slave trade and recognizes the resilience of people of African descent throughout the African diaspora in resistance to slavery. Through international, innovative, interdisciplinary collaboration the CSGS promotes, expands and changes both the research and practices of museums and other public humanities institutions around the history and afterlives of racial slavery and the global slave trade.

This position is located in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), Office of Curatorial Affairs, centered in the Center for the Study of Global Slavery (CSGS). The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring timely operation and organization of CSGS projects (Slave Wrecks Project (SWP) and the Global Curatorial Project (GCP)) and initiatives of the Center, including:
  • organizing, implement and/or coordinating public and educational programs; training programs, workshops; convenings; exhibitions; and public history-related projects around topics related to African, African American and Diaspora history;
  • coordinating the SWP and GCP initiative including extensive global fieldwork in Europe, Latin and South America, the Caribbean, and Africa as well as domestic fieldwork and planning travel in the United States;
  • assisting the CSGS director and staff to create and implement formal operation protocols;
  • assisting in the development of contracts, letters of intent, memorandums of understanding, etc., to solidify partnerships for an ongoing exhibition partnership; and
  • coordinating with the Media and Public Affairs office for media requests.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as facilitating collaborations and partnerships with cultural heritage organizations, (culturally-related museums, libraries, archives, or preservation organizations); coordinating and convening diverse stakeholder meetings; crafting and implementing programs; and preparing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), proposals, contracts and fulfilling a range of procurement duties.

Or Education : Three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree related to this position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.

Or a
Combination : Education and experience, in part, totaling 100% may be combined to meet the basic qualifications.
