You will serve as a Utility Systems Repair Operator in the Public Works Department of NAVAL FAC ENGINEERING CMD WASH.

Responsibilities

  • You will perform a combination of work involving operational maintenance and repair of boiler plant equipment.
  • You will operate all equipment in a boiler plant to produce and control the amount of steam necessary to meet demands.
  • You will collects samples of boiler water, performs prescribed tests, and determines amount of chemical to be fed into boilers for treatment of water control of corrosion and chemical concentrations.
  • You will operates numerous auxiliary equipment, such as pumps, water heaters, fans and de-aerating equipment.
  • You will maintains logs, records and other plant data as required.
  • You will answer all trouble calls and take the appropriate action.
  • You will adjust firing controls, fuel feeds, and air drafts for best combustion efficiency.
  • You will ignites fires, puts boilers in service, and closed down boilers.

  • You will be required to obtain within one year and maintain either a current Maryland 3rd Class Stationary Engineer license or a National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers (NIULPE) 3rd Class Power Engineer license.
  • Applicant has the option of obtaining within on year and maintaining a current American Society of Power Engineers (ASOPE) 3rd Class Power Plant Operator Engineer License.
  • Incumbent may be required to obtain and maintain certification as a Maryland Visible Emissions Evaluator if testing is provided.
  • Incumbent must be able to wear and use all required personal protective equipment (PPE) to meet requirements of duties being performed (safety glasses, safety shoes, earplugs, hardhat, ect.)
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final Secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION
1) Start, operate, adjust, stop, maintain, and perform various operational repairs on single or multiple fuel power boilers and associated auxiliary equipment that compose the central energy plant; 2) Maintain efficient combustion levels; and 3) Use manual, automatic, or computer control or control systems to monitor, adjust, and control all phases of boiler plant operations.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. This position requires exposure to high noise levels, exposure to extreme temperatures, smoke, dirt, noise, unpleasant odors, toxic fumes, toxic dust, water, fuel oils, chemicals, and all types of weather conditions. Work may result in bruises, burns, ect., from steam, heat, or machinery.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including shift work, nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Scheduled hours are subject to change with short notice. Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position.

After normal working hours, on weekends and holidays the incumbent will operate the Emergency Service Desk. The incumbent will answer all trouble call and take appropriate action.

Incumbent performs primarily manual work covered by the Federal Wage system. This position is determined to be nonexempt in accordance with 5 CFR, Section 551-204, which indicates that FWS position are nonexempt from the provisions of the FLSA.
