If selected for this position, you will serve as a Legal Assistant (OA) for the United States Attorney's Office, Western District of Virginia. Typical work assignments will include:

Performs legal research in support of financial litigation matters.

Utilize a variety of automated legal research tools as well as public information databases and other automated resources to research case- or program-specific legal matters, and to participate in assigned areas of criminal or civil proceedings, e.g. electronic discovery.

Acts as a legal assistance subject matter expert and provides training, guidance and technical assistance to other legal support staff.

Interprets and enforces judgments in criminal cases, and independently performs all functions to collect amounts imposed as a result of the prosecution of criminal cases.

Composes original letters that do not require legal interpretations, but do require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology, e.g., transmittal of pleadings, requests for extensions of time in certain cases, advising of actions taken or developments in cases referred by other federal departments and agencies, and notices to attorneys representing defendants.

Prepares a wide variety of legal documents, many of which are voluminous and complex in format.

Obtains and analyzes financial information on debtors to determine their present and future potential ability to pay. Initiates contact with debtors concerning payment of their obligations, their ability to pay, and negotiates written payment schedules to assure successful collection of debts.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Specialized Experience: GS-08: You must have one year of specialized equivalent to the GS-07 grade level performing a variety of legal support assignments relating to complex financial litigation actions and matters, included the use of automated legal research tools as well as public information databases; assisting attorneys in preparing for court such as preparing exhibits, compiling trial notebooks, compiling witness and exhibit lists; verifying citations; and preparing a variety of legal documents; assisting in the use of technology to organize digital evidence; and editing a variety of legal documents, such as information requests, subpoenas, correspondence and memos.
