Job Announcement

Develops, establishes, evaluates and promotes programs for children from age three to 16 years old to best meet the need of the youth population of Small District 1-A of Dranesville. Implements and executes programs for Camp McLean, and the Old Firehouse Teen Center. Serves as a liaison between groups and the McLean Community Center. Works u nder general supervision.

General duties include:
  • Establishes networks or resources for programs or services for youth.
  • Coordinates overall plan and organizes production schedules for the following programs: Camp McLean (a 6-week licensed camp program for youth, 3 to 10 years old). Old Firehouse Teen Center summer excursion camp, winter/spring break trips, & teacher workday trips (for 5th grades to 10th graders).
  • Insures provision for publicity information to MCC for distribution.
  • Researches and develops camp/trip locations, activities & programs.
  • Interviews, trains, conducts evaluations and hires seasonal & yearly part-time staff. Schedules and staffs Old Firehouse trips.
  • Develops, recommends, monitors, and implements program budgets for the Old Firehouse trips and Camp McLean.
  • Drafts all purchasing requests and performance contracts for Camp McLean, Old Firehouse Teen Center summer programs and winter/spring break camps. establishes fees for programs.
  • Tracks and monitors revenues and expense limits, goals, and guidelines. Authorizes purchase requests and invoices for payment.
  • Obtains and maintains the licensure for yearly operation of Camp McLean.
  • Drives 10 passenger bus to provide services for participants.
  • This position works under the general supervision of the Old Firehouse General Manager

Note: This position requires occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work.

General Duties
  • Plans, coordinates, schedules, supervises, and evaluates the operations and maintenance of the assigned facility or facilities;
  • Hires, trains, supervises, schedules, and evaluates staff;
  • Plans, schedules, and conducts specialized on-site staff training;
  • Completes and submits various financial, administrative, and statistical reports;
  • Identifies, recommends, and writes justifications for budget components such as capital equipment submissions;
  • Adheres to revenue and expense limits, goals, and guidelines for specialized areas of supervision;
  • Authorizes purchase requests and invoices for payment;
  • Inspects facilities and grounds for safety hazards and operational deficiencies, recommends improvements, and initiates corrective measures;
  • Responds to public inquiries and concerns;
  • Participates in the development and implementation of community outreach plans to target underserved populations and to increase overall program participation;
  • Analyzes and evaluates service in terms of individual and community needs;
  • Performs administrative functions at a facility, including budget preparation, recruitment of volunteer staff, maintenance of records necessary to the operation and evaluation of center programs, and report preparation.
Programming
  • Plans, organizes, supervises, and schedules specialized activities and programs sponsored by the park, recreation, teen, community, or senior center in cooperation with residents and related agencies;
  • Schedules, coordinates, and evaluates class, camp, and tour programs held at parks, centers, schools, government facilities, and private vendor locations;
  • Coordinates planning, scheduling, and billing for day and overnight trips and tours.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation center and /or park management;
  • Knowledge of fiscal record keeping and inventory procedures;
  • Ability to use a personal computer, applicable software and peripheral equipment;
  • Ability to direct and coordinate the work of subordinate staff and volunteers;
  • Ability to plan, develop, and administer recreation programs or community activities;
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with employees and citizen groups;
  • Ability to prepare a variety of administrative reports;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:
(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for “Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to”) graduation from an accredited two-year college or university with an associate degree in recreation, park management, therapeutic recreation, or a closely related field; plus two years of related experience in recreation center, park, athletic field, golf course operations, or community-based program coordination or a related field, as applicable to the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability in dealing and working with kids ages 3-18 and youth with cognitive and physical disabilities.
  • Skilled in developing and implementing programs and events for kids aged 3-18.
  • Knowledge of preparing and maintaining operating budgets.
  • Knowledge of the Virginia Department of Social Services licensing requirements.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Valid driver's license (Required)
  • CPR (Required within 3 months
  • First Aid (Required within 3 months)
  • AED (Required within 3 months)
  • Medication Administration Training (MAT) (Required within 3 months)
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driver's license check and child protective services registry check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Per Virginia licensing requirements, must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Position requires physical mobility and sensory awareness sufficient to observe and direct staff performance, activities of minors, facility operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicle.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
