This position is located in the Mission and Readiness Support Directorate (MRSD), Administration Division, Cheltenham, MD. The purpose of these positions is to support FLETC divisions and serviced Department of Homeland Security (DHS) components. Serving as a Equipment Facilities and Services Assistant at FLETC makes you a valuable member of the FLETC team and mission. Typical assignments include:
  • Operating the Facility Help Desk, to include receipt, processing, tracking, and closure of facility maintenance trouble calls.
  • Performing preliminary analysis of information gathered on a specific project or assignment to facilitate more in-depth analysis by higher-level personnel.
  • Scheduling and monitoring of vehicle, facility, and equipment maintenance.

  • Receiving incoming mail, searching files, gathering and attaching correspondence and back-up material upon which replies can be formulated.

  • Receiving and responding to service calls, maintaining facility and automotive maintenance records, preparing standard office forms, and requisitioning facility and automotive supplies and office services.

  • Maintaining suspense files to facilitate timely responses to information requests.
  • Operating various office equipment, machines, and systems.
  • Processing purchase requisition forms to obtain tools, parts and services for the facilities and automotive functions.
  • Developing, maintaining and reporting using developed metrics and analyzing maintenance requirements for all vehicle, facility, and equipment assets using the Computerized Maintenance Management System, Vehicle Management Information System (VMIS) and other locally developed tracking mechanisms.

You qualify for the GS-05 grade level if you possess:

At least 4 years of education above the high school level; (transcripts must be provided as proof)


At least 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level performing such duties as receiving and responding to telephone calls, maintaining facility and automotive maintenance files, preparing standard office forms, requisitioning facility and automotive supplies and office services. My experience involves operating various office equipment, machines, and systems.


An equivalent combination of specialized experience and education above the high school level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours will be combined with the specialized experience. Transcripts must be provided as proof.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps and AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The Office of Personnel Management must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.

You will need to sign a Recent Graduates Program Participation Agreement for this appointment.

Your supervisor will place you on an Individual Development Plan (IDP) within 45 days of your appointment. Your IDP will consist of a minimum of 40 hours of interactive training that will equip you with the competencies necessary to advance the goals and mission of our agency.

You may be non-competitively converted to a permanent position upon meeting all of the requirements outlined in your Participant Agreement and completing 40 hours of interactive training.

Physical Demands: The work is sedentary, but may include walking, standing, bending, and carrying light items such as paper and books.

Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in an office setting; however, may be required to perform some of the assignments in training areas and maintenance shops, warehouses, and garages. Position may be required to drive a government-owned or government-leased vehicle to perform duties at locations on and off-site.

Re-employed annuitants' annual salaries will be reduced by the amount of their retirement annuity and by further cost of living increases.
