Job Description

The Washington Post Opinions department is looking for a front-end developer with strong design and data visualization skills to join its visuals team to push the boundaries of our commentary and storytelling with riveting, highly informative and immersive experiences.

Opinions has increased its commitment to multimedia storytelling in the past two years, producing projects that have been recognized by the Online News Association, the Society for News Design and the White House News Photographers Association. We've been doing excellent work , and now we're searching for a great colleague to make us even better.

The ideal candidate is a thoughtful journalist who can flourish in a fast-paced environment and bring creativity to a project from its early stages while collaborating to develop a vision for how the experience can be shaped across our many digital platforms.

You will work closely with the Opinions art director, graphics editor and video editors, as well as development teams from the newsroom's design and graphics staffs. We're a collegial, tightly-knit team that cares deeply about the work and how we can support each other to get it done.

Consider applying if you have several of these qualities: You're an expert in using HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create brilliant interactions; you know how to develop in React (the base of most of our code at The Post), build data visualizations in D3 and work with maps in QGIS; you have a keen eye for kerning as well as coding; you have experience working with video in your projects; and you are interested in development best practices and helping to create new storytelling components. Mostly, though, we're looking for an enthusiastic collaborator who is excited to take on new challenges. This position does require 2+ years of software development experience.

We prefer candidates who can work in our D.C. newsroom after the pandemic, but will consider highly qualified remote applicants.

The Post Opinions department strives to provide readers with high-quality, trustworthy commentary while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should apply via Workday by Jan. 22. Please include your résumé, a cover letter focused on how you can help make our work stronger and a link to a portfolio of your best work.

The innovation doesn't end in the Newsroom - dozens of teams power The Washington Post. We are now hiring the next innovator - how will you Impact Tomorrow?
