TRANSPORTATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES INSPECTOR I

An Overview
A Transportation and Environmental Services Inspector I is responsible for inspecting construction projects within the City to ensure compliance with approved plans, budget, projected completion time, specifications, and related codes and regulations. This is technical and skilled inspection work involving the City’s sanitary and storm sewers, streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and reinforced concrete. Employees in this class inspect contractor’s and developer’s construction project prior to, during, and after construction and are responsible for recommending approval or denial of final acceptance by the City and bond release to private developers. Work is performed under general supervision.

The Opportunity
  • Inspects street and road construction, including method of construction, material used, grading, sub-grading, and surfacing to ascertain that construction meets approved plans and specifications;
  • Inspects daily the installation of storm and sanitary sewers, underground utilities, pipes, culverts, street light conduit systems to ensure that facilities are installed in compliance with approved grade plans;
  • Investigates and assists with the resolution of citizen complaints;
  • Inspects erosion controls and Best Management Practice (BMP) installations;
  • Writes daily reports of construction progress;
  • Checks to ensure that proper safety procedures are used in trenches and temporary re-routing of traffic;
  • Inspects and reviews site and construction plans, profiles, and grade sheets for accuracy;
  • Inspects curbs, gutters, sidewalks, catch basins, storm drains, and special design structures during construction to determine if forms are set to grade and the specified class of concrete has been used;
  • Works with construction contractors to make necessary field adjustments or makes the adjustments;
  • Perform other duties as required.

The Ideal Candidate
High School diploma or GED; knowledge in construction of concrete, asphalt, sidewalk, curb and gutter, storm drains; at least three years of construction field inspector experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Recognition of “Miss Utility” color- coded markings. Employees in this class must have a valid driver’s license issued by their state of residence.

To be considered as an ideal candidate, on should possess at least five (5) years of experience as a field inspector, working knowledge of street construction, budget preparation, site management and state and local codes for the job, and proficient computer skills.
