Summary

The incumbent will provide comprehensive care to both ambulatory and critically ill patients through outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, critical care units, emergency department and long term care in areas of Medicine, Surgery, Mental Health, Extended Care, Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury, along with supportive and Social Services.

Responsibilities

Duties Include, but not limited to:
  • Provides guidance and support to the nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants assigned to Medical Service .
  • Provides guidance and supervision for the medical students and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows) as required. Coordinates with the Residency Program Director; Administrative Officer, Medical Service; Chief and Assistant Chief, Medical Service; and Associate Chief of Staff, Education in order to maintain and expand the current education programs within the Salem VAMC.
  • Creates, maintains, and revises work schedules and assignments for all subordinate staff to ensure 24 hours per day, 365 day per year coverage of the Neurology section. May be required to adjust schedules on short notice to meet frequent, abrupt, and unpredictable changes in prescribed workloads, staffing changers and deadlines.
  • Ensures department cooperation with, and active participation in, various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services such as Quality Management, chart reviews, Neurology performance measure reviews and the like.
  • Completes all required clinical and administrative documentation and training within guidelines. Oversight of subordinate employee documentation completion, workload capture, and participation in resident, student, and fellow teaching sessions is the responsibility of the incumbent.
  • Identifies individual professional learning needs and participates in related formal programs, workshops, seminars, conferences, as well as self-directed learning activities. Assists subordinates in identification of the same, actively encouraging professional growth and development.
  • Provides quality patient-centered patient care to presenting adults age 18-65 and older adults age 65+ as assigned by Chief, Medical Service.
  • Provides consultant services in the field of Neurology to other medical and surgical departments at the VA medical center.
  • Exhibits leadership in suggesting and, with management approval, instituting changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from clinical research and guidelines. Keeps informed of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal.
  • Utilizes problem solving methodologies to resolve problems that impact patient care or staff performance.
  • Participates in the formal education of medical students and residents by presenting teaching rounds, lectures, conferences, etc.
  • Assists in conducting studies regarding treatment modalities, outcomes, and other aspects of
    patient care when appropriate.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent needs to be mobile in that the job requires: sitting, walking, standing, and bending. Work requires daily trips from employee's work-site to other areas throughout the Medical Center

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
