Summary

This position is located within a National Forest. Theposition is a technical biological assistant performing routine tasks in natural resources, under a higher graded technician or professional.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of tasks relating to natural resources, i.e., water, land, food, plants, animals, and soils. Assignments are performed within established methods, techniques, and procedures.
  • Independently, or as part of a team, makes browse surveys; takes and records data, counts, sorts, identifies species, and performs measurements.
  • Utilizes topographic maps; photographs, and data that identify a variety of natural resource areas and conditions.
  • Uses a variety of tools to collect and record data such as numbers, measurements, weights, samples, and special notes.
  • Makes recommendations for easily identifiable corrective action, based on site survey findings.
  • Summarizes data obtained from field collections using prescribed statistical procedures. Under supervision, prepares data summaries in proper format.

Qualifications

GS-04: Applicants must have six months of any type of work that demonstrated the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation AND six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-3 grade level; OR an associate's degree or two years of successfully completed education above high school (90 quarter or 60 semester hours) that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, agriculture, or mathematics and at least 6 hours must be directly related to the position; OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

Examples of General Experience includes: Performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding and tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; Worked in a greenhouse or nursery moving, watering, and tending plants & performing other general labor; Worked on a landscape or construction crew; Other work experience, paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn & perform the work of this position.

Examples of Specialized Experience includes: Research activity or control program work. Or nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment. Or work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice. -OR

PLEASE NOTE: This vacancy is being used to fill positions for FY2021 Temporary Employment Hiring season.

This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year, however an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or lack of funds.

The duty station for this position will be at one of the duty locations listed in this announcement. Salary range as shown is the locality pay Rest of U.S. (RUS). Pay rates vary by location. Please visit the Office of Personnel Management's website for additional information on pay rates.

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

You will be evaluated in accordance with the category rating procedure as defined in the USDA Demonstration Project Plan. Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. Eligible applicants will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Assessment Questionnaire. Applicants with veterans' preference are listed ahead of applicants who do not have veterans' preference within each category.
