Duties

Summary

The incumbent will be responsible for consultative services and support for clinical projects to support the clinical research mission of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The work of the incumbent covers a very broad range of clinical activities including, but not limited to reviewing protocols, Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) reports, and ad hoc consultations with the extramural program component of the NIMH.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a major resource for all office staff with respect to biostatistics and clinical epidemiological methods.
• Provide expert statistical and epidemiological advice to agency.
• Conduct analyses of clinical research, and evaluate experimental designs and procedures for performing research of new statistical methodologies.
• Assist in the education of staff relating to statistical methodologies relevant to their programs.
• Provide technical consultation and leadership on complex statistical studies.
• Present work at scientific meetings, conferences and seminars.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Statistician, GS-1530 position, you must have:

A. a degree that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements is given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

OR

B. a combination of education and experience; courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

In addition, in order to qualify for a Statistician, GS-1530 position at the GS-13 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 obtained in either the private or public sector that included the following tasks and responsibilities: initiating, formulating, planning, and executing the statistical portion of analytic research projects; analyzing, interpreting and disseminating statistical research results for health-related study programs; planning, designing and implementing the research criteria and study design and methods for a health-related statistical research program; and developing and using automated statistical applications and software programs to analyze large, complex nationally representative statistical survey data.
