Job Description The Shift Supervisor works with the nurse manager and assistant nurse manager in providing leadership and operational support on assigned shifts to the department. The Shift Supervisor is a subject matter expert and demonstrates competence with nursing process to provide patient care and patient/family teaching in the ED environment. The Supervisor will hold team members accountable by ensuring adherence to appropriate federal, state and local regulations, professional standards, hospital policies, procedures and guidelines. Patients served may include neonate through adult-geriatric. Education & Experience Requirements; * Associates Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing required. * Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing preferred. BSN required within two (2) years of hire. Must show continuous progress towards completion of BSN from time of hire. * Three to five years' experience in the Emergency Department with demonstrated understanding and support for the model of care delivery, throughput initiatives and importance of striving for satisfactory patient experience preferred. * Must demonstrate ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information. * Must demonstrate effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. * Successful completion of required hospital, nursing and unit orientation. * Must meet all unit specific certification requirements: (BLS, PALS, ACLS). * Must maintain a minimum .9 FTE. Licensure & Certification Requirements: * Currently licensure as Registered Nurse (RN) in state of Maryland or compact state required. * Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. * Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required. * Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required. * Specialty certification preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Demonstrated leadership ability. * Demonstrates understanding of department workflow, daily operations and goals of service line. * Effective communication skills. * Strong organization skills. * Ability to maintain environment that promotes staff productivity, satisfaction and efficiency. * Ability to problem-solve, manage conflict and difficult situations. * The ability to ensure the confidentiality and rights of all patient and departmental documents is required. * Ability to read, analyze, and interpret physician's orders and other written communication methods of the health care team is essential. * Ability to respond to customer inquiries or to those of other members of the health care team must be present. * The incumbent must demonstrate an ability to read and interpret age-specific data regarding patient conditions. * He/she must demonstrate spoken English ability to communicate patient and family education in an age appropriate context. * Ability to work with mathematical concepts in the preparation of medications, intravenous drips and other therapeutic interventions. * Ability to identify problems, collect data, establish facts regarding the patient/family condition, and to prioritize the needs of the patient and family. Physical Demands: Will work in a clean, well-lighted environment. The job requires pushing and pulling and lifting of equipment weighing in excess of 35 pounds up to 40% of the time. Requires lifting and positioning of patients, weighing up to 300 pounds, with the assistance of other staff members, up to 60% of the time.
