Summary

This position is located in Smithsonian Institution's Office of Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR). The incumbent for this position serves under the general supervision of the Crafts General Maintenance and Operations Supervisor. The employee is responsible for a variety of duties related to the wood crafting zone.

Responsibilities

• Repairs and restores priceless historical furniture and other wood items by utilizing several types of specific materials for proper match of authenticity.
• Performs rare and unusual types of jointing and gluing; allows for temperature considerations in the use of glue or adhesives and plans lays out work from specifications, blueprints, sketches and oral instructions.
• Builds new or modify existing structures, selects, measures and cuts suitable lumber for framing materials as well as lumber, plywood and wood substitute panels for floors, walls and other surfaces.
• Installs metal fire resistance and sound transmission walls and ceilings, cuts metal studs, miter cuts, metal door jambs, window frames and trim; uses carbide saws, metal hand files, nippers and other metal tools to fit miters to tolerance of 1/64 of an inch or less.

Physical Requirements:

Works in tiring positions for prolonged periods. Position requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, crouching and arm movement. Frequently climbs ladders and works overhead on ladders and scaffolds in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Frequently lifts and carries material and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:

Required to wear protective equipment for extended periods.

Additional Requirement:

Must have a valid State or District of Columbia driver's license.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

How you will be evaluated:
Applications will first be evaluated to determine whether the following screen out element is met:

Ability to do the work of a wood crafter without more than normal supervision.

If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated:

Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation and repair related to wood crafting.

Knowledge of technical practices related to wood crafting (theoretical, precise, artistic).

Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (including blueprints reading) related to wood crafting.

Ability to measure and perform layouts related to wood crafting.

Ability to use and maintain tool and equipment relating to Wood crafting.

Knowledge of materials used in performing the work of a wood crafter (i.e. hardwoods, softwoods, plywood, veneers, wood substitutes, etc.)

Applicants who meet or exceed the screen-out element will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Category - Meets the screen-out element and excels in most of the job related elements above.
Better Category - Meets the screen-out element and satisfies most of the job related elements above.
Good Category - Meets the screen-out element, but does not satisfy most of the job related elements above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-veterans within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no veteran in that category is passed over to select a non-veteran in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.

Veterans who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
