Summary

The incumbent is responsible for painting and paper hanging throughout the Washington, DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Duties and responsibilities include the preservation, protection and appearance of surfaces and finishes to the interior and exterior of all buildings, structures, furniture and building accessories.

Responsibilities

This position serves as a Painter and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Must have experience as a journeyman paper hanger in operational practices, tools, and materials. Must be able to apply wall covering in accordance with manufacturer's instruction, using mechanics experience and skill.
2. Must be able to repair cracks in masonry, deteriorated caulking compounds and other materials to assure that surfaces are prepared to receive paint or wall covering so as there are no marks or rough areas visible when paint or wall covering is in place.
3. In the performance of his/her duties must select and use the proper equipment and tools such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, compressors, scraper, straight edges, scaffold and ladders.
4. Must be able to mix all painting materials to ensure uniformity of color, complete dispersion of pigment and uniform composition.
5. Must be familiar with all types of paints and related components of crafts required to accomplish assigned duties, such as water, rubber alkyd base, oils, enamels, varnishes, epoxy and paint removers.
6. Must be able to use and have knowledge of spray compressors, nozzle's and all related spraying equipment.
7. Must be able to emboss signs, paint traffic lines and directional signs by lettering or stencil, paint boundary fences, light posts and fire hydrants.
8. Must be able to install vinyl, yarn type, construction and face wall covering.
9. Must be able to mix and apply adhesives by methods and means strictly in accordance with manufacturer's directions.
10. Must be able to install wall paper to be secure, smooth and clean, without wrinkles, gaps or overlaps.
11. Must be able to assure that each type of wall paper is of the same dye lot, color, and design.
12. Must be able to install wall coverings in continuous sheets and be able to butt all joints to hairline fit.
13. Must be able to double cut wall paper in order to match exactly.
14. Incumbent may be asked to provide tasks and work order to other staff painters in cases/opportunities where the Carpentry and In-House Projects supervisor is unavailable.
15. Incumbent is subject to the responsibility of other related duties as assigned.

lifting, kneeling, standing, climbing and stooping. Painter duties to include maintenance and repairs frequently require working in awkward and cramped positions and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds. Frequent standing, walking, and climbing are required while checking requirement areas of the DC VAMC.

Incumbent is required to use ladders, scaffolds, platforms and may require working in cramped and hard to reach places. Daily task require lifting, carrying objects and equipment. On occasion may be required to wear protective clothing and equipment. Incumbent is also subject to possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes and burns.
