For a view into our world, please visit our website at www.birminghamgreen.org Summary: The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for a broad range of Nursing Department services, including the hiring of staff, establishing departmental procedures, staff training, and the organization and delivery of nursing care to residents of the facility. The DON works closely with all levels of nursing staff, and particularly with key professional staff. The DON is responsible for assuring the delivery of high-quality care to the residents on all shifts, and works as liaison with other departments and outside individuals and organizations providing related services to the residents. The DON also communicates with family and physicians to ensure optimum care for the residents. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. | Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and participate in the Policy & Procedure Committee. | Proficient communication skills and the ability to effectively relate, present information, and respond tactfully to questions from residents, families, administration, medical staff, nursing personnel, other department supervisors and the general public. | Desire to work with the elderly using high nursing skills and standards. Possession of leadership, supervisory, and organizational skills. | Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. | Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to patiently and tactfully deal with resident or staff problems in all situations. Ability to make independent and prudent decisions within scope of responsibilities and assignments. | Current unencumbered license to work as an RN (preferred) in the Commonwealth of Virginia, CPR Certification, First Aid Certificate. | Current valid driver's license. Education and Experience: | Current unencumbered RN (preferred) license through college, associate degree, or three-year diploma school. A Bachelor's degree is preferred. | Three - Five years experience in long-term care facility as a DON or ADON. Rehabilitative and restorative nursing skills preferred. | Knowledge and experience related to the physical and emotional needs of disabled adults and the elderly. | Knowledge of the laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to assisted living care. | Computer skills - MS Word, Excel, Outlook; CareTracker and Ultracare. Essential Functions: Administrative: | Is familiar with state regulations and standards for nursing homes, and ensures with administration the compliance of services with those regulations and standards. | Reviews with administration and social services applications from potential residents, and coordinates the admission of residents to the facility with families and departments of social services, according to policies and procedures of the home. Responsible for completion of nursing documentation to the state on admissions as required. | Is responsible for the routine ordering of supplies needed for nursing services, under general guidelines provided by administration, unless done by other trained personnel. | Determines with the Administrator in the annual review of staffing and budgetary requirements, including the development of projected capital equipment budget. Nursing Services: | Periodically reviews and updates policies and procedures with respect to nursing service unless delegated to other trained professional personnel. | Organizes, directs, and controls, consistent with established standards, the services of the Nursing Department to residents admitted to the facility. Plans, organizes, directs, and implements a nursing services program that will meet the medical needs of the resident from admission through discharge using all resources available within the facility and community. | Provides overall monitoring of the care provided to residents; coordinates the development by all disciplines of resident care plans. | Ensures appropriate charting and documentation of nursing services, the confidential handling of resident information, and appropriate transfer or communication of resident information to families and agencies as appropriate. Personnel: | Hires, encourages, counsels, and discharges employees of the Nursing Department, consistent with policies and procedures established by administration. Responsible for timely completion of performance evaluations of staff. | Schedules the staffing of the Nursing Department on a timely basis and in general assures the adequacy of staffing for all shifts, consistent with budgetary guidelines established by administration and the Health Center Commission unless done by other trained professional personnel. | Retains required personnel information for the department, documents information related to work schedules and provides other information as required by the Personnel Department on a timely basis for payroll and other purposes. Reviews and authorizes any required overtime. | Plans, organizes, and implements a program of staff development, and inservice training for nursing staff in conjunction with the Staff Development Coordinator. May assume direct responsibility for conducting some inservice training programs or may delegate responsibility to other trained personnel. | Develops with administration and the Staff Development Coordinator general policies and guidelines for operation of a geriatric nursing assistant training program. Quality Assurance: | Develops tools in the Nursing Department for the Quality Assurance Committee, and other committees as assigned. | Enjoys a good working relationship with key staff of other departments, and assists administration in the evaluation of services to the residents. | Assures the ongoing functioning of a system for adequate monitoring of the quality of nursing services to residents. Makes routine visits with residents, consults with attending physicians, and provides direct observation of staff services as part of this monitoring program. | Investigates and responds to resident or family problems and concerns, or refers them to administration or social services as appropriate. Miscellaneous: | Enjoys a close liaison and working relationship with physicians, pharmacists, and other service providers in the facility. | Retains general responsibility for the care, control, and proper use of departmental equipment. | Pursues professional growth through attendance of inservices, seminars, etc. Participates in community planning related to the interests of the facility. | Retains strict ethical professional behavior and maintains confidentiality. Exercises good judgement and tact when dealing with residents, families, other professionals, and staff. | Promotes and adheres to organization, federal and state regulations and guidelines, including Resident Rights. | Performs other related duties as assigned by the Administrator. May be delegated certain responsibilities of the Administrator in his or her absence. May assume direct patient care responsibilities in the absence of the Nursing Supervisor.
