The Selectee will work either shift 1 with a salary of $45.42 Per Hour
OR shift 3 with a salary of $45.42 Per Hour with 10% Night Differential.

Responsibilities

  • Performs initial editing and processing of files (for example: PDF, Word, Text) from Office of the Federal Register (OFR) for the Register and Congressional products.
  • Troubleshoots and effectively processes work and understands the production priorities (for example: Federal Register, Congressional Record, Reports, Hearings and other Congressional products.)
  • Distributes and reviews the work of Proofreaders. Checks the galley proofs returned by Proofreaders or revised by the readers, making additional marks when errors are detected or when coding changes are needed to effect the desired results.
  • Answer queries on galley proofs and verifies marks on proofs, refers queries to the effected department, as needed.
  • Maintains consistency of typefaces, spacing, capitalization, and punctuation on each jacket.
  • Instructs readers on Government Publishing Office (GPO) style and any changes instituted by the Joint Committee on Printing not listed in the Style Manual, and/or those changes received through the Senate, House, and the OFR.
  • Advises readers where to look for information needed to properly process proofs. Assigns collating, stamping, or logging-in of work to available support staff.
  • Advises and assists Trainees and Detailees assigned to the section and interprets rules and regulations for employees with regard to their work.
  • Keeps supervisor apprised of exceptional workers and/or the poor work performed by Proofreaders. Assures that subordinates observe rules and regulations on housekeeping, conduct, safety, and occupational health. Reports findings to supervisor.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position, you must meet the following requirements: Applicants must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to independently perform the duties typically required of a Head Deskperson. These duties require skill in:

Knowledge of the procedures and processes related to Proof and Copy Markup. This includes proofreading text to make changes and answer queries regarding press jobs, answer readers questions regarding office style and peculiarities in work of an extraordinary nature, and interpret formats, coding and preparation when of a technical nature.

Applicants must meet the following Screen-Out element, to be considered for this position. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT below is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. The screen-out element for this position is:

Ability to perform the work of a Head Deskperson with normal supervision.

In addition to the requirements above, GPO employees competing under merit promotion procedures must meet all of the following criteria in accordance with Federal Merit Promotion Plan, GPO Instruction 615.2C (Appendix B): 1. Have completed a formal, recognized apprenticeship or GPO journeyperson training program, or possess substantially equivalent practical experience in the trade of the vacancy; AND 2. Have at least 1 year of journeyperson experience subsequent to completion of the above apprenticeship or training; AND 3. Have served a minimum of 1 year in Career or Career-Conditional appointment in the GPO.(add supervisory statement from MP Plan). 4. Have served at least 1 year in an administrative or supervisory capacity.

OR

1) Have obtained a Baccalaureate Degree or three years of responsible experience in the printing industry equivalent, at a minimum, to the GPO journeyperson level, 2) Have two years of experience in the printing industry of a scope and quality sufficient to carry out the duties of the position - one year of which was at or comparable to the PG-12 level, AND 3) Have served a minimum of one year in a career or career-conditional appointment in GPO.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Background Investigation:
To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully completed a background investigation for suitability. This review could include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs. Depending on the type of background investigation required, the security process may take between 6 weeks to 12 months.

The agency may rescind the tentative offer, if the candidate is unable to obtain an interim clearance.
