Responsibilities

  • This is an advanced developmental position description (PD) leading to the full performance position description: Legal Assistant, GS-986-09-PD# 5E030. The duties at this level are characteristic of the full performance PD.
  • Conducts quality review audits of Social Security disability and non-disability cases at the Ready-to-Schedule (RTS) stage as part of the Quality Assurance Program.
  • Performs quality-based examinations of cases as well as the work of support staff regarding development of the record including case intake, development, preparation, scheduling of hearing, and post-hearing development,
  • analyzing the record prepared by senior case technicians of cases to be scheduled for hearing before administrative law judges (ALJs).

Qualifications

FOR THE GS-8: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-07 level, or equivalent, which is in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such experience includes experience summarizing case documents, navigating agency systems, and reviewing legal documents in order to apply agency policy.

FOR THE GS-9: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-08 level, or equivalent, which is in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.: Such experience includes summarizing case documents, navigating agency systems, reviewing legal documents in order to apply agency policy, and analyzing legal data in order to prepare formal comments and/or recommendations.

Qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Applicants for promotion to GS-8 must have 52 weeks at GS-7.
Applicants for promotion to GS-9 must have 52 weeks at GS-8.

Time in grade requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

NONCOMPETITIVE CONSIDERATION DUE TO SPECIAL HIRING AUTHORITY

LOCALITY PAY: Salary will be set in accordance with locality pay provisions. Candidates currently receiving a higher locality pay than the office applied for are advised that should they be selected, they will lose entitlement to the higher locality pay.

OTHER NOTES:

THIS IS A VIRTUAL ASSIGNMENT. INDIVIDUAL SELECTED WILL REMAIN IN THEIR PERMANENT DUTY STATION AND WILL RECEIVE THE RESPECTIVE LOCALITY PAY FOR THAT AREA.


This position is a career ladder leading to GS-9.

This position is eligible for telework.

Relocation expenses will not be paid.

This is a moderate risk. The selected employee will be required to complete a Standard Form 85P, Questionnaire for Public Trust Positions, in order to have the appropriate investigation conducted, unless the employee has been previously certified eligible to occupy a position at this level.
