Summary

This position is located in the Electrical Shop, Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) Branch, Operations and Maintenance Division of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

The incumbent will be responsible for performing the electrical work and other diversified duties on complex electrical and electronic systems, electrical equipment, alarm systems, and lighting systems.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects constructs, installs, modifies, maintains, repairs, controls, diagnoses, troubleshoots, tests, loads, and repairs a wide variety of electrical distribution lines, systems, branch circuitry, fixtures, controls, motors, and equipment.
  • Installs, inspects, modifies, maintains, repairs, and operates controls of variable frequency drives, switch gears, motor controllers, and auxiliary power generators and their associated transfer switches.
  • Repairs or replaces defective motors, transformers, ballasts, contactors, relays, breakers, fuses and switchgears.
  • Recommends electrical work and projects that most effectively maintain the value and extend the life cycle of Kennedy Center facilities.
  • Responsible for achieving goals where the methods, means, and components combined are without precedent and require research, ingenuity, creativity, and collaboration with Kennedy Center employees, consultants, manufacturers, and contractors.
  • Maintains logs and records of equipment and system conditions in order to identify trends that reveal operating or energy usage inefficiencies.
  • Identify electrical and lighting systems that may provide energy savings through upgrading, retrofitting, replacement, or elimination.
  • Works with engineers, specialists, and consultants to build or modify systems or equipment based solely on a statement of work describing no more than desired performance.
  • Estimates costs of work; research and specify appropriate supplies, materials, and equipment for purchase toward completion of goals and assignments.
  • Troubleshoots electronics or electrical circuits containing electronic components in order to isolate cause of malfunction in electronic components.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Efforts and Working Conditions:

Incumbent must be in good physical condition. The incumbent will climb ladders and must be able to climb stair towers of greater than 100 feet. Accessing work sites often requires walking more than three miles throughout the day and stepping over objects. Work of this position involves pushing, pulling, or carrying of objects of varying sizes and shapes, weighing up to 75 pounds.

Incumbent works in confined areas such as attics, near ceilings, in utility corridors, etc. Incumbent will work from various heights on ladders, lifts, and scaffolding. Duties are performed both inside and outside in weather conditions varying from hot, humid summer heat to below freezing winter temperatures.

Stipulations of Employment:

Selection may require completion of a 1-year probationary period.

This position requires operation of a Government vehicle, therefore, proof of possession of a valid state driver's license is required.

Work Schedule:

This position requires a fixed work schedule; flexible work schedules will not be authorized.

The tour of duty for this position is Monday - Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
