Specialized Experience
One year of specialized experience at the GS-13 or its equivalent that include a full range of professional research and statistical work in transportation safety, such as applying known research study designs and statistical techniques to derive insights from transportation accident and injury data (e.g., descriptive studies, meta-analyses, systematic or evidence-based reviews, case-control studies, or other types of research studies); and data and statistical analysis using one or more of the following: Python, R, SQL, SAS, or SPSS. Experience must also include the use of oral and written communication skills to clearly communicate study results and safety recommendations in plain language to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities
- The ideal candidate is a highly motivated transportation researcher with excellent data science, report writing, and public speaking capabilities, and a strong interest in improving the safety of the traveling public in creative and meaningful ways.
- Design, plan, and initiate research, and conduct studies of risk factors or hazards that influence the causes, incidence, and costs of transportation accidents, injuries, or injury severity.
- Conduct evaluations of the effectiveness of safety countermeasures, such as policies, programs, and technologies, at reducing transportation accidents, injuries, or injury severity.
- Serve as the project manager and technical lead for safety research studies, reports, and recommendations.
- Compile, prepare, and publish annual transportation accident data statistical reports to inform and educate on transportation safety.
- Participate in accident investigations in all modes of transportation to provide data and statistical analysis, and technical consultation on study design and methods, and data visualization, analysis, and interpretation.
