This position is part of the Defense Media Activity. The incumbent will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks involved with the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, utilities, and equipment.

Responsibilities

As a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC at the WG-4749-10 some of your typical work assignments may include:
  • Performs electrical work installing, modifying, repairing, and testing new and existing electrical lines, circuits, and systems including wiring, conduit and other electrical equipment.
  • Work involves diagnosing and locating malfunctions, dismantling, repairing, reassembling, installing, replacing, and performing preventative maintenance on large systems that provide for a variety of heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
  • Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems.
  • Develops contract specifications and inspects the services rendered by contractors and completes necessary forms in accordance with inspection duties.

Qualifications

Per OPM Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations, the applicant's experience, education and training must show enough knowledge, skills and abilities to demonstrate the potential to successfully perform the duties of the position. Under this system, how applicants gained their skill and knowledge or the length of time they have spent in a line of work are not as important as the fact that they have the required ability or potential to do the job. This job has one critical element, called the screen-out element (SOE). Applicants who clearly fail to meet the lowest acceptable requirements in the SOE will be rated ineligible without further review of their application.

Additionally, applicants who do not receive an average factor value of at least 2 points for all job elements will be eliminated from further competition.

You must possess experience in:
  • Repair and preventative maintenance on large systems that provide for a variety of heating, ventilation and air conditioning;
  • Construction, installing, repairing and modifying wood and wood substitutes structures and items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, interior and exterior trim and miscellaneous items;
  • Maintaining, repairing or modifying for accessibility, and occasionally structures of concrete, block, and occasionally brick or other related materials;
  • Installation, modification, and repair of new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and preparing and painting walls, ceilings, and fixtures
