An Overview
The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessment, monitoring and providing medical coordination for up to 25 clients having signs and symptoms from various misused substances. ARTC RN assesses the consumer's medical and mental health at admission and coordinates with the consulting doctor, psychiatrist, emergency room, and other health care providers to develop a treatment plan for the safe withdrawal of the substances. ARTC RN administers and monitors medication, provides case management services, health education and crisis intervention to clients with mental illness and/ or substance use disorders. Provides teaching and feedback to counseling staff in how to monitor clients.

What You Should Bring
The ideal candidate should have good knowledge of nursing and clinic policies and procedures; good knowledge of approved medical terminology and abbreviations; good knowledge of the function, use, maintenance, and safety precautions of all equipment used; ability to clinically evaluate patients/clients before medicating; ability to monitor clients on a variety of medications; ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to provide nursing services to complex patient situations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships between staff, hospital employees, administration, physicians, visitors and patients; ability to chart accurately, legibly, timely and completely using an electronic medical record system.

The Opportunity
  • Screens new referrals for appropriateness;
  • Assesses in-house clients for current health status by checking vital signs every 4-8 hours as needed;
  • Refers clients with medical and mental health needs to an appropriate resource for care;
  • Follows-up on clients receiving medical/psychiatric care;
  • Schedules appointments and verifies appointments, when necessary;
  • Coordinates care with the CSB psychiatrist and team therapist for clients with co-occurring disorders;
  • Develops and implements nursing care for clients with a variety of complex medical and mental health needs;
  • Provides feedback and follow-up information to unit staff, CSB psychiatrist and ARTC medical director as indicated;
  • Maintains timely and precise records of all medication dispensed;
  • Protects the confidentiality of clients at all times;
  • Exercises all prescribed security measures;
  • Meets with case managers to review client cases for medical/psychological
    implications when requesting treatment and/or aftercare;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing; eligibility for, or current licensure with the State Board of Nursing of the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Possession of an active Commonwealth of Virginia Registered Nurse license in good standing or compact agreement between VA and participating states as applicable. Must have at least one year of experience working in a mental health treatment setting, medical/surgical setting and/or a non-medical adult withdrawal management setting. Must have a valid driver's license. Fluent and Bilingual in both English and Spanish.

As an Essential Employee, staff will be expected to be at work during weekends, holidays, or inclement weather if they have been scheduled.
