Summary

This position is located at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, Security Division in Washington D.C. The primary purpose of this position is to perform various security-related functions at the AFRH-Washington campus.

Responsibilities

As a GS-05 Security Guard, you will:
  • Tour the entire facility of the AFRH on foot and/or by patrol vehicle. The security guard will report any breach in the outer fence to his/her supervisor. The security guard will secure or stand guard at any breach of the outer fence of the AFRH until properly relieved by his/her supervisor.
  • Tour on foot the buildings and rooms located on the grounds of the Home.
  • Conduct vehicle patrol duties during their shift and will be seated for a long period of a time.
  • Perform foot patrols consist of standing and walking up and down stairs to different floors in and around the buildings.
  • Respond to emergency and/or routine calls within the AFRH. These emergency and/or routine calls include, but are not limited to: Pull Cords, Pendants, Death reports, Assault reports, Theft reports, Accident reports, Trespassing, Damage property reports, Fire alarms, Intrusion alarms, Escort fireboard/law enforcement personnel to a destination.
  • Display a customer service attitude toward the residents, employees and visitors.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment.

The work requires physical exertion such as walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting items weighing 50 pounds or less, and driving a motor vehicle. Work may also require long periods of surveillance at fixed and/or mobile positions.

Specialized experience is fifty-two (52) weeks of experience at the GS-04 level or equivalent in other public or private sectors, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Specialized experience for this position includes experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Forces or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular basis.

In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-5, candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-5 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.

Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- A one year probationary period may be required.
- Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency

- Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.
- Selectees will be subject to the AFRH Tuberculosis Surveillance Program.
- Shift Work: This facility operates on a 24 hour per day, three-shift basis. Assignment to a specific shift cannot be guaranteed. The successful applicant must be available to work on all three shifts on a rotational basis.
