Summary

The positions are located in the Economic Analysis and Regulatory Analysis Sections in the Division of Insurance and Research at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, conducting economic research in support of the Corporation's efforts to identify, monitor and address critical existing and emerging aggregate risks to the FDIC's deposit insurance funds.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and assists on projects and studies concerning insurance fund exposure, including methodologies to improve the pricing of risks to the funds.
  • Investigates emerging issues and topics pertaining to the risk exposure of the deposit insurance funds. Gathers, analyzes, and presents information pertaining to the performance of insured institutions and other developments affecting the deposit insurance funds.
  • Compiles and provides information for incorporation into studies, policy analyses, testimony, and other corporate documents.
  • Assists in the use and enhancement of financial and statistical models and organizes data for presentation.
  • Communicates about projects and findings to other divisions and other regulators orally and in writing.

Qualifications

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious/spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Additional qualifications information can be found here .

CG-09: Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 07 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience performing at least two or more of the following functions: (1) evaluating policy alternatives in a regulated banking environment; (2) using statistical software programs to evaluate and manipulate large data sets; (3) developing and working with economic models; or (4) evaluating bank data in a regulatory environment to identify risks and trends in the banking/financial industry.

OR you may substitute education as follows:
  • You must have earned a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in economics or a related field.
  • Have a combination of education and experience that meets the requirements for the CG-09. You must have graduate level education as described above, beyond the 1st full year of graduate level education and specialized experience as describe above that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

  • CG-11- Applicants must have at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the CG/GS-09 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience performing three or more of the following functions: (1) evaluating policy alternatives in a regulated banking environment; (2) creating computer software programs to evaluate and manipulate data sets using SAS, STATA, MATLAB, SQL or Python; (3)using computers to construct economic and financial models covering the banking and financial industry using SAS, STATA, MATLAB or Python; or (4) evaluating banking data in a regulatory environment to identify risks and trends in the banking/financial industry.

    OR you may substitute education as follows:
  • You must have earned a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in economics or a related field.
  • Have a combination of education and experience that meets the requirements for the CG-11. You must have graduate level education as described above, beyond the 2nd full year of graduate level education and specialized experience as describe above that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

    Education

  • Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.

  • Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

    How You Will Be Evaluated

    You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

    A. Knowledge of principles, theories, and research methods pertaining to economic and financial analysis.

    B. Knowledge of concepts, procedures, and methods used in mathematical and statistical calculations.

    C. Ability to conduct financial, economic, and banking analysis.

    D. Skill using personal computers and software applications for data analysis/presentation.

    E. Ability to write statistical reports.

    F. Ability to communicate orally to gather information, reporting findings and explain statistical results to varied audiences.
