Summary

This position is located in the Operations & Maintenance Division, Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Branch (MEP), HVAC Shop of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

The purpose of this position is to serve as Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Mechanic Supervisor on the Kennedy Center staff. The incumbent will be responsible for supervising HVAC work and other diversified duties on complex HVAC systems, controls, and building automation systems (BAS).

Responsibilities

  • Develop work schedules, review material take-offs, determine and prioritize resource requirements; establish the minimum and maximum number of subordinates needed to safely and successfully accomplish specific tasks; and develop work schedules.
  • Make recommendations as to which projects should be done in-house or by various contracted sources, write necessary work scopes, and review specifications for work contracted to the private industry.
  • Initiate job requisitions and cost estimates for contracts pertaining to electrical projects.
  • Use trend analysis and diagnostic skills to evaluate operation of systems and equipment and recommend the necessary degree of rebuild, replacement, or alternate sequence of operations.
  • Supervise projects that include in-house staff, engineers, specialists, contractors, and consultants in order to build or modify systems or equipment based solely on a statement of work describing no more than desired performance.
  • Review drawings and provide comments and suggestions to identify changes, modifications, or improvements to the systems being designed using written, verbal, and electronic communication methods.
  • Develop, manage, respond to and administer a program that incorporates external work orders, standing work orders, and internal work orders.
  • Inspect, construct, install, maintain, repair, control, diagnose, troubleshoot, modify, relocate, and load and test a wide variety of HVAC systems, controls, motors, and equipment on various complex special purpose control systems.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Efforts and Working Conditions:
Incumbent must be in good physical condition. The incumbent will climb ladders and must be able to climb stair towers of greater than 100 feet. Accessing work sites often requires walking more than three miles throughout the day and stepping over objects. Work of this position involves pushing, pulling, or carrying of objects of varying sizes and shapes, weighing up to 75 pounds.

Incumbent works in confined areas such as attics, near ceilings, in utility corridors, etc. Incumbent will work from various heights on ladders, lifts, and scaffolding. Duties are performed both inside and outside in weather conditions varying from hot, humid summer heat to below freezing winter temperatures.
