Summary

Independently performs routine to moderately complex radiographic and computed tomography examination procedures. These exams are achieved by using diagnostic x-ray equipment such as fluoroscopic units, direct digital units, general diagnostic units, and computed tomography scanner. Performs computerized tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest, and body. These exams are performed with and without the use of contrast materials.

Responsibilities

Major duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Prepares and administers contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable solutions such as IVP or CT scan exams and for the purpose of performing oral and rectal exams of the GI tract. With training and under supervision of the radiologist, establishes IV access and administers IV contrast. Observes patient for signs and symptoms of adverse contrast reaction and initiates the appropriate response for varying levels of severity. Prepares contrast materials for cystogram, fistulograms, and arthrography. In the case of injected media, a patient consent form must be obtained. These procedures require the use of needles, syringes, injectors, non-ionic contrast media, barium, enema bags and drinking cups.
  • Responsible to the radiologists and supervisor for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed in order to assure a high level of acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs.
  • Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patient, staff and self. This is achieved by the use of lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, lead-lined walls and collimation. The technologist is to assure compliance to radiation regulations and is to wear film badges. The incumbent must also be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the medical center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed.
  • Performs processing of digital images using the CR system. Performs quality control of the images, assessing for proper exposure, positioning and annotation. Applies CR post-processing techniques such as window leveling, edge enhancement, brightness and annotation corrections as necessary before routing images to printer, workstation (RAD VISTA) and/or archiving in PACS, to provide adequate and properly processed images.
    Prints film from a processor or makes a disc (CD) of the patient's studies when necessary, such as when a patient is being seen by an outside facility or being transferred to another facility.
  • Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. Edits and when necessary registers patients in the computerized Radiology Information System (RIS) as well as the work list management portion of the HIS-RIS interface.
  • Properly identifies the patient and the image. Uses left and right markers. This is essential so that mistaken identity does not occur. The technologist must be certain that the patient ID and the request are identical.
  • Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that the patient understands what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, is possible. May be required by procedure or patient's condition to monitor vital signs, recognize allergic reactions and initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Performs radiographic exams at the bedside and in the operating rooms providing diagnostic images to the surgeons and professional staff on patients that are unable to be examined in the Radiology Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures. The technologist will achieve these exams by using portable x-ray Units and/or a mobile C-ARM unit that is located in Surgery. Upon request, operates the digital fluoro/RAD unit in the urology suite.
  • Performs radiographic exams at the bedside and in the operating rooms providing diagnostic images to the surgeons and professional staff on patients that are unable to be examined in the Radiology Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures. The technologist will achieve these exams by using portable x-ray Units and/or a mobile C-ARM unit that is located in Surgery. Upon request, operates the digital fluoro/RAD unit in the urology suite.
  • Supports CPT coding compliance: utilizes appropriate CPT codes for exams performed and performs timely and accurate case editing for each exam.
  • Supports, identifies and/or initiates performance improvement plans that utilize the facility model for quality improvement. Participates in identifying key aspects of care, developing strategies for improvement, and collection and analyzing data.
  • Responsible for cleanliness and stocking adequate levels of supplies in assigned areas. Must report equipment malfunction in a timely manner to the supervisor.

  • Pursues continuing education activities to stay current in techniques and maintain competency. Disseminates information of general interest.
  • Performs a variety of computerized axial tomographic scanning, using both cerebral and whole-body techniques.
  • Performs reconstructions of CT and angiographic studies when requested or when part of a standard procedure.

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States.

Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.]

Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]

Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS:

Creditable Experience.
    Knowledge of Current Radiologic Technology Practice. To be creditable, experience must have demonstrated possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (also referred to as clinical competencies) associated with current radiologic technology practice. This may have been evidenced by the equivalent of one year of active practice, which is paid or non-paid employment as a DRT as defined by ARRT.
  • Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it was earned after completion of the basic certification requirements identified in paragraph 2b above. Experience as a graduate DRT is creditable provided the candidate functioned as a DRT and subsequently passed the certification examination.
  • Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a DRT is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a DRT would receive one week of full- time credit for each two weeks of half-time work.
    Specialized Assignments. Specialized areas of radiologic technology include general diagnostic radiologic technology (R), bone densitometry (BD), mammography (M), diagnostic ultrasound (S), computed tomography (CT), [ ] magnetic resonance imaging (MR), [ ] [interventional radiologic technology (IR) [ ].

    Computed Tomography (CT). This specialty modality requires specific knowledge of cross-sectional human anatomy and its application in spiral, and/or, multi-slice computer tomography, inclusive of 3-D reconstruction scans, including drainages, biopsies, and peripheral vascular examinations. The technologist requires specific knowledge and training in the location, appearance, and function of the various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination; to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and inter-relationship of the various organs; to use the methods and techniques which will identify organs appearing on the digital display monitor, or on film, and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the image and/or scan for diagnostic use and to emphasize the aspects of interest to the physician. [DRT assignments that include performance of independent duties in this subspecialty require advanced ARRT certification.]

    GRADE DETERMINATIONS. In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates:

    Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-8

    Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.

    Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

    Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

    i. Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established
    guidelines.
    ii. Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed.
    iii. Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results.
    iv. Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed.
    v. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers.
    vi. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.
