Physician positions are a mission critical occupation for HRSA. These positions are responsible for formulation of policy and programs administered by Health Resources and Services Administration to provide advice and assistance to Bureaus, Department of Health and Human Services, and other Federal entities as related to the medical aspects of primary health care programs for under-served populations.

MAJOR DUTIES:

As a Physician, you provide board and complex medical consultation, guidance and leadership to HRSA and to national, state and/or local government agencies, universities, health-related organizations, private and public foundations, etc., in the development, extension, and improvement of the sickle cell disease and thalassemia programs, systems, strategies and/or services.

Your major duties and responsibilities include:
  • Providing medical advice and consultation on critical problems in the sickle cell disease and thalassemia service delivery that requires innovative or novel approaches.
  • Reviewing and analyzing relevant medical findings and policies at the Federal, state and local levels to determine their influence on improving access to services for individuals with sickle cell disease and thalassemia; improving and expanding patient and provider education; and, improving and expanding the continuity and coordination of service delivery for individuals with sickle cell disease, or who are carriers of the sickle cell gene mutation, or who are affected with thalassemia.
  • Providing medical expertise to support the provision of coordinated, comprehensive, culturally competent and family-centered care for individuals living with sickle cell disease with partners such as Federally Qualified Health Centers; non-profit hospitals or clinics; university health centers offering primary care; sub-specialty comprehensive sickle cell centers; and community-based organizations that provide resources to people living with sickle cell disease or thalassemia.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: A copy of your unofficial transcripts (diplomas will not be accepted) or ECFMG results are required with your application by the closing date of this announcement. If selected, official transcripts will be required.


A. Degree: You must have a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

B. Degree from Foreign Medical School: You must provide a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country.

OR

Documentation that verifies successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

AND

GRADUATE TRAINING: Your resume must clearly indicate the starting (MM/YYYY) and ending dates (MM/YYYY) and where the training was completed.

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. Graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below:

An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.

AND

For GS-14 you must have four (4) years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. LICENSURE REQUIREMENT: You must also have an active, permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. You must provide a copy of your current/active license with your application by the closing date of this announcement.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: In order to meet the basic qualification requirements for this position, you must be board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Medical Specialties (A.B.M.S) in a specialty relevant to the position being filled such as: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or Preventative Medicine or Hematology. You must provide a copy of your board certification or documentation of board eligibility with your application by the closing date of this announcement.
