Summary

This Direct-Hire position is in the Food and Drug Administration and is located in the Office of the Commissioner, Office of the Chief Scientist, Office of Laboratory Safety (OLS) which is responsible for developing, centralizing, standardizing, and implementing policies; planning, directing, managing, and evaluating activities for these programs; and implementing best practices across the FDA.

Responsibilities

  • Provide management and guidance to the FDA's broad scope Radiation Safety Program, informing and interpreting applicable regulations, and recommending the adoption or implementation of specific policies and procedures.
  • Participate as a lecturer in the Office's training program for users of radiation sources.
  • Conduct evaluations of multi-disciplined research operations to identify hazards associated with chemical, biological, and radiological activities and industrial operations and develops appropriate corrective measures.
  • Oversee training of individuals as well as work towards harmonizing training among the FDA's radiation programs, informing users of safety procedures and techniques, and conducting refresher training as required.
  • Act as a consultant in the design and conduct of experiments using radiation sources to ensure that exposures to personnel are maintained as low as reasonably achievable.

Qualifications

The position of Health Physicist falls under the 1306 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-14, you must meet the following:

Applicants must meet the Basic Requirement AND Specialized Experience as stated below:

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

Minimum Qualifications:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

You must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade GS-13 or equivalent band level of responsibility in the Federal service that includes experience: conducting laboratory inspections to ensure compliance with policy and regulations; providing advice and consultation to management on policy and procedures; developing solutions to solve radiation and health physics problems; and ensuring all staff are properly trained as required by policy.
