Responsibilities

The incumbent will develop new computer modeling approaches to yield precise all-atom representations of biomolecular structures and the evolution of these structures over time; experimentally derive well-refined solution state experimental data on model systems to use in computational model development, including data from small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS), solution neutron scattering (SANS), NMR, cryoEM and other structural biology and biophysical methods. S/he will use well-defined experimental datasets to tune molecular mechanics force fields to better reproduce the conformational structure and dynamics of biomolecules in their native environment; and apply these methods to peptide, protein and nucleic acid molecules used as platforms for biopharmaceuticals.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

  • OR
  • Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

  • IN ADDITION: To qualify, applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level (or ZP-II at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and data analysis; experience in the use of biomolecular modeling and visualization software; experience with computer programming languages; and experience with machine learning algorithms.

    Master's or equivalent graduate degree
