Responsibilities

You will serve as the primary point of contact between CG Headquarters and national and international news media (electronic and print) and act as advisor on media relations CG wide. This frequently involves the active participation of the media relations staff in the reporting of "hard news" in the Washington DC area and elsewhere when the activities being reported upon are of significant national/international magnitude.

Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Typical work assignments include:
  • Planning and implementing national media campaigns to convey information to the public on a variety of programs, policies and activities. Additionally, in the event of a crisis, is generally responsible for coordinating responses to media inquiries, relating to crisis operations, with the Headquarters staff and regional, District offices.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with members of the national and international media such as major news services, radio and television network news personnel, representatives of major newspapers, free-lance authors, book and magazine editors and publishers, maritime and military publications, and the maritime trade press, in an effort to insure accurate reporting of CG programs.
  • Conducting complex and exhaustive research into all Coast Guard programs and controversial issues and provides comprehensive data to media representatives so that they may report on all aspects of Coast Guard operations, missions and policies in major news stories on a national and international basis.
  • Marketing CG story concepts, articles, research reports and papers to national and regional magazines, authors, and free-lance writers to the media.
  • Preparing, coordinating and releasing information to the media on various programs and activities which may attract national interest; in this capacity, acting as an official spokesperson for the CG, frequently conducting interviews with major news media.
  • Providing timely, accurate responses to all requests for information about the CG from news media representatives, other government agencies, members of Congress, free-lance writers, magazine and book publishers and editors and professional associations.

Qualifications

At the GS-13 level: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the federal service.

Examples of specialized experience include:

- Experience collaborating with internal offices and external organizations to improve the quality and effectiveness of public affairs activities.

- Experience making recommendations to senior officials on communication strategies and objectives.

- Experience writing speeches, drafting briefing materials, reports and other official documents on behalf of the organization and leadership.

- Experience executing comprehensive public affairs strategies integrating media relations, social media, community/congressional relations, internal information and report preparation.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
