Summary

This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Animal Biosciences and Biotechnology Laboratory, in Beltsville MD.

The incumbent will develop research plans and conduct experiments that will integrate dietary alternatives to antibiotics and applied nutrition strategies with the physiology, microbiome and health of the gut to improve nutrient utilization and production efficiency in poultry.

Responsibilities

  • Develops nutritional strategies that promote growth and meat yield while retaining feed efficiency in the absence of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs).
  • Reevaluates the availability, digestibility, utilization and retention of nutrients in the absence of AGPs;
  • Identifies the impact of dietary alternative to antibiotics (ATAs), such as prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, or phytobiotics, on nutrient utilization and ingredient digestibility.
  • Assess the impacts of gut physiological state (e.g. microbiome fluctuations, intestinal health) on nutritional efficiency in the presence of ATAs.
  • Takes a systems biology approach to decipher the central roles of gut physiology, microbiome, and health in net nutrient utilization.
  • Performs specific methodologies including, but not limited to, nutrient digestibility and retention; gut metabolism and absorption; physiological assessment of relationships between poultry growth and gut function.
  • Performs specific methodologies including, but not limited to poultry diet optimization, chemical analyses of feed; and statistical methodologies such as residual feed intake calculations.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements
Degree: in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.

Additional Requirements
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

GS-12:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are Experience independently conducting research related to poultry nutrition, alternatives to antibiotics, or poultry physiology and development; being recognized through citation as a contributor to projects or peer-reviewed publications related to poultry nutrition, alternatives to antibiotics, or poultry physiology and development; AND presenting research findings related to the above at scientific meetings.

GS-13:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are: Experience coordinating or leading a collaborative project on poultry nutrition, alternatives to antibiotics, or poultry physiology and development; independently publishing research findings related to poultry nutrition, alternatives to antibiotics, or poultry physiology and development as first or corresponding author; AND presenting research findings related to the above at scientific meetings.Collaborating with internal or external stakeholders on research of mutual interest.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation.
