President/CEO for Columbia Association (MD)
The Columbia (Maryland) Association (CA) is seeking a visionary, collaborative, and transparent leader to be its next President/CEO. CA is a 501(c)4 nonprofit community services organization that manages Columbia, Maryland, covering 32 square miles in area and home to approximately 100,000 people. Located within 20 miles of Baltimore and 30 miles of Washington, D.C., Columbia consistently receives accolades as a top 20 place to live from Money Magazine and Niche.com. Columbia was founded in 1967 by James Rouse and the Howard Research and Development Company to create a community of choice that respected the natural environment, welcomed diversity, and provided a full complement of services for personal development and well-being.
CA is governed by a board of ten members elected by voters in each of Columbia’s ten villages and the President/CEO, who serves as a non-voting board member. The CA organization has a staff of approximately 200 full-time and over 1,000 part-time and seasonal team members, organized into five departments: Community Services, Sport and Fitness, Open Space and Facility Services, Communications and Marketing, and Administrative Services. CA has a 2020-21 annual operating budget of nearly $56 million and a capital budget of $8 million.
The President/CEO oversees, directs, and manages the CA organization, supervising and working through an 11-member senior leadership team. The position reports to the CA Board of Directors. Major responsibilities of the President/CEO fall into three broad priorities: strategic, visionary leadership, being the “face” of CA, and managing the CA organization.
The President/CEO position requires a bachelor’s degree in business administration, nonprofit management, or a related field and extensive responsible executive experience in managing a community services corporation or non-profit organization of comparable size and complexity. Qualified candidates must have a keen business acumen, excellent interpersonal, communications and listening skills, and experience working with and supporting a Board of Directors or similar governing body. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong record of community and/or organizational leadership, a history of service on philanthropic and/or community service boards, success in developing and implementing strategic plans, experience leading organizational change and continuous improvement and knowledge in community development/planning and sound environmental practices.
The salary range for this position is $177,500 - $283,600 DOQ/E. CA offers a comprehensive benefits package that consists of health, dental and vision insurance; disability and life insurance; a 401(k) retirement savings plan; “CA Fit & Play” membership, paid vacation, sick leave and 10 holidays; and, other options to support quality of life. The successful candidate must relocate to Columbia to a CA-assessed property within six (6) months of the effective date of employment. Relocation is negotiable.
