Summary

This position is located in the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH)/Nursing Division in Washington, DC and provides professional acute and rehabilitation/restorative nursing to geriatric residents with chronic disease processes. The incumbent carries out nursing procedures independently with the framework of established policy.

Responsibilities

As a GS-10 Clinical Nurse, you will:
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for the geriatric patients based on the nursing process.
  • Implement the physician and nursing care plan.
  • Transcribe and implement the provider's written orders.
  • Administer medications observing the five rights, apply knowledge of the use and side effects of each medication, and complete the appropriate documentation.
  • Assess and evaluate daily the resident's condition.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Work requires considerable standing, walking, transferring, bending and lifting in helping residents in and out of bed, changing their positions. Utilization of appropriate body mechanics is mandatory. The incumbent is subject to exposure to communicable diseases. Required to lift up to 50 pounds.

Education:

A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required.

CPR certification is mandatory.

AND

Licensure:
RN- For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

AND

Specialized experience: For the GS-10, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:

Conducting patient/resident assessment; AND
Developing and carrying out nursing care plans; AND
Medication administration (oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal, topical, rectal, intravenous, etc.); AND
Communicating patient/resident condition and changes to patient/resident, nursing personnel, physicians, and family members.
OR
Education:
Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or
At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelors degree, or masters degree from a professional nursing educational program.

SPECIAL NOTE: Long-term care experience and/or interacting with geriatric patients is highly desired.

- Wear required safety clothing and/or equipment required by the position. This may include gloves, masks, etc.
- Shift Work: This facility operates on a 24 hour per day, three-shift basis. Assignment to a specific shift cannot be guaranteed. The successful applicant must be available to work on all three shifts on a rotational basis.
- Because the AFRH's mission requires uninterrupted, direct human support and medical care for its Residents, this position is considered essential for continuing AFRH operations. Therefore, the incumbent is expected to arrive for duty on time, as scheduled, and to complete the assigned tour during emergency situations such as hazardous weather.
