Summary

This position is located in the Office of the General Counsel in Washington, DC. This position is remote due to the ongoing pandemic however eventual onsite work in DC will be required.

The incumbent serves in a developmental student intern capacity performing work assignments to support attorneys/and or staff members that vary based on the office where the student is assigned.

Relocation expenses will not be paid.

Responsibilities

Interns will work on the full range of communications and technology topics handled by the Commission to advance the Commission's policy goals of empowering consumers, increasing all communities' access to affordable broadband and protecting national security.

Interns will assist the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsels and other attorneys throughout the Office with legal research, writing, and analysis. Interns may also participate in meetings with various stakeholder groups and help with external outreach such as drafting speeches and press statements. Duties may also involve interacting with industry counsel, consumer groups, congressional staff, and agency personnel on a variety of issues.

NOTE: the FCC's building is currently closed. Until the building reopens, interns will be asked to work remotely.

Looking for law students with a strong academic record and interest in communications law and a commitment to public service.

  • Be a law degree seeking student.
  • Suitable for employment as determined by a background investigation.
  • Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service.

Must maintain at least half-time enrollment status as defined by your school.
Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications. Therefore, you should only report attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Qualifications

  • A degree seeking student in the field of Law and have completed one to two years of study toward law degree.
  • Enrolled in a school that has been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Enrolled at least half-time as defined by your school.
  • Be in good academic standing (i.e., must have at least a 3.0 GPA or its equivalent).
  • US Citizen or if you are not a citizen you must meet one the following criteria: 1. owe permanent allegiance to the United States (for example, natives of American Samoa and Swains Island); 2. be a lawfully admitted for permanent residence and seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)(B); or 3. be admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C. 1157 or have been granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. 1158 and have filed a declaration of intention to become lawful permanent resident and then citizen when eligible.

GS-07: Completed one full academic year of graduate level education toward a law degree.
GS-09: Completed two full academic years of graduate level education toward a law degree.
Education requirements must be met prior to appointment. Updated transcript is required to verify requirements have been met.
