Summary

The Telecommunication Network and Technology Branch (Code 566) at Goddard Space Flight Center is seeking an Electronics Engineer to perform communications systems analyses of potential missions to ensure ground network needs can be met. This branch supports the development of communication systems for NASAs ground systems. Duties may include optical link budget analysis, orbital analysis, software design, or topographical analysis.

Responsibilities

  • This Electronics Engineer position develops or evaluates network communications plans to assist NASA's return to the moon, future satellite missions, and may support Project Artemis.
  • Utilizes Radio Frequency communications characteristics, to evaluate the communications potential of upcoming science and human space flight missions. This includes, but is not limited to, recommending space and ground communications characteristics.
  • Interfaces with NASA missions to understand their communications requirements.
  • Applies Matlab, programming, or scripting knowledge to generate appropriate tools for proper communications analysis and to evaluate tools to determine if current communication tools are reliable.
  • Processes information from terrestrial telecommunications systems and the interface with ground navigation stations.
  • Uses software design to create telecommunications solutions.
  • Utilizes either analog or digital electronic circuit design to create hardware solutions.
  • Analyzes orbit determination data to identify appropriate ground stations with which spacecraft can communicate.
  • Duties described above are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-11: In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) One year of professional experience in an appropriate field at least equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to GS-9 level work in the Federal service within or closely related to the aerospace technology specialty for which application is made. Specialized experience includes using Matlab or similar numerical computing environment creating scripts and graphs; experience applying wireless communication principles; experience working with programming languages; or

(b) Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field; or

(c) Completion of three full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field; or

(d) An equivalent combination of experience and graduate education.

To qualify for the GS-12: In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, applicants must meet the specialized experience requirements:

Specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12) includes: working with wireless communication link budgets; experience using programming languages to support communication systems; experience assisting in the design of digital or Radio Frequency (RF) circuits.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science that provided in-depth knowledge of the following: (1) theoretical foundations and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; and (2) essential mathematical and statistical techniques. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Other majors will qualify if the major includes or is supplemented as follows: Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics (or other related field), if includes or is supplemented by two courses in solid state physics, materials, optics, statics and dynamics, electricity and electronics, electron optics, kinetic theory of gases, electromagnetic propagation or radiation, semiconductors, vibration, high vacuum theory, information theory or heat transfer.
