This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Planning and Project Management, Construction Division, Construction Branch. The selectee will be responsible for providing carpentry support to new construction and renovation projects in assigned jurisdictions within the Architect of the Capitol.

***THIS POSITION IS TEMPORARY, NOT TO EXCEED 13 MONTHS. ***IT IS A POSITION THAT IS SUBJECT TO THE PROJECT NEEDS OF THE AGENCY. THEREFORE, THE APPOINTMENT COULD BE TERMINATED AT ANY TIME DUE TO SHORTAGE OF WORK OR SHORTAGE OF FUNDS. IF PROJECT WORK CONTINUES; HOWEVER, IT COULD BE EXTENDED BEYOND THE 13-MONTH TIME FRAME AT THE SOLE DISCRETION OF THE AGENCY***

The selectee will perform the following duties:
  • Plans, computes, and lays out complex and exact projects with features such as arcs, tangents, and circles for new construction and renovation projects. Interprets complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, building codes, and uses advanced shop mathematics to calculate measurements and dimensions to produce finished products with precise fits and accurate dimensions.
  • Constructs, alters, installs, maintains and repairs items where accurate spacing, precise fit, and structural soundness are essential, such as window frames, interior/exterior trim or staircases.
  • Builds, installs, fixes, and/or alters wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring work to close tolerances, fit, appearance and structural soundness, such as building door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, counter tops, bookcases, etc., for new construction and renovation projects. Installs or replaces interior partitions, flooring, panels, suspended ceilings, counter tops, and moldings. Builds and puts together items using a variety of joining techniques, such as mitered, rabbet, dado, biscuit, dowel, mortise and tenon joints.
  • Fabricates and repairs historical ceilings, roofs, stairways, windows, architectural trim, studs, mud sills, steps and hand rails. Follows blueprints and drawings to assemble/re-manufacture parts and pieces of historic wood items, or splice in new wood with old.
  • Performs from complete designs and sketches to build concrete forms for foundations, columns, walls, beams, girders, catch basins, stairways , floor systems, slabs, waffle slab construction, one way slabs, two-way joist construction, curtain walls, and conductive flooring. Builds projects with steel, concrete, aluminum, acrylic, drywall, brass, glass, bronze, carpet, plastic, fiberglass, rubber, mirrors, stainless steel, steel wire, and grating.
  • Establishes and runs general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment, such as routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses. Operates and uses power and hand tools and woodworking equipment such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, sanders, routers, power nailers, combustion-type saws, screw fasteners, drill presses, and tables saws. Establishes and adjusts stationary power equipment, such as radial arm saws. Sets up the tools and adjusts them to make certain cuts and moldings.

This position is temporary in nature and is not to exceed 13 months. This is strictly a temporary appointment where there is no permanent need or permanent funding available for the work involved. This position is subject to the project needs of the Agency. Therefore, the appointment could be terminated at any time due to shortage of work or shortage of funds without any advance notice. If project work continues however, it could be extended beyond the 13-month time frame at the sole discretion of the Agency. As a non-permanent employee, you may also be separated for failure to meet management's expectations, with no advance notice.
