Job Announcement

Reston Community Center seeks an individual with a strong work ethic and the ability to work independently. The successful candidate will work as part of a team to maintain the Reston Community Center's 50,000 square-foot Hunters Woods facility and 13,000 square-foot Lake Anne facility. Duties are performed under the direction of the Facility Operations Manager. Specific duties include:
  • Completes room setups for rental activities, classes, workshops and special events.
  • Provides high quality customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Ensures cleanliness of the facility and performs routine basic maintenance tasks.
  • Opens facility and/or closes and secures facility.
  • Must be able to exercise independent judgment, work with minimal supervision and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
Note: The starting salary will not exceed the midpoint (or $41,504.53) of the advertised compensation range. Promotional rules apply for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees

Schedule: Typical work week will be afternoons and evenings Saturday through Wednesday, 8 hours per day. Occasional overtime, holiday work or schedule changes may be required based on operational needs.

Illustrative Duties

  • Collects and/or disposes of refuse, yard debris, recyclables, and other solid waste materials;
  • Assists customers at homeowner's disposal facility;
  • Assists with spill cleanup and traffic control onsite at the disposal facility as well as throughout the county;
  • Clears sidewalks of ice and snow;
  • Removes, cleans, and replaces manhole covers;
  • Inspects and repairs sewer lines and sewer cave ins;
  • Assists in the operation of sewer rodding machines;
  • Mixes and pours concrete for foundations or other construction repair work;
  • Assists pumping station operators in the maintenance and minor repair of equipment;
  • Operates various types of trucks (e.g., dump truck, loader, flusher) for transporting equipment, tools, or crews to job sites;
  • Reads meters;
  • Cleans facilities, to include removing trash and litter;
  • Loads and unloads trucks;
  • Moves furniture, heavy equipment, and materials;
  • Performs routine building maintenance tasks (e.g., replacing light bulbs, moving and making minor repairs to furniture);
  • Repairs and maintains walkways, gutters, and downspouts;
  • Applies pesticides, fertilizer, and other chemicals under supervision of a certified pest applicator;
  • Maintains and repairs grounds and turf (i.e., reconditioning, vegetation control, and repairs);
  • Repairs irrigation systems (i.e., sprinklers, valves, and pipes);
  • Performs various landscaping tasks, to include propagating beds, edging, mulching, and planting;
  • Performs minor building and/or equipment repair and/or maintenance;
  • Operates tractors and mowers, chain saws, or cutoff saws;
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
  • Reports unsafe working conditions;
  • Complies with safety competencies.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of construction and maintenance of asphalt and concrete;
  • Working knowledge of small equipment to include weed eater, push mower, power tamper, chain saw, concrete saw and gas generator;
  • Basic knowledge of air compressors and pneumatic tools;
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use and perform basic scheduled maintenance on various types of hand tools, machinery, etc.;
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices;
  • Ability to perform duties requiring manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude;
  • Ability to operate various types of motor vehicles;
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions;
  • Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc.;
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor;
  • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees and supervisors.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • A valid motor vehicle driver's license is required. Positions within this classification requiring a valid motor vehicle license are subject to a driving record check as a condition of employment and periodically thereafter, as determined by Risk Management.
  • Forklift Safety Training Certificate required within 12 months of appointment.
  • Some positions within this classification may require a valid commercial driver's license (CDL). CDL class and endorsement(s) are determined by the needs of the business area.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two years of experience working in a large community center or event center setting (i.e., hotel, conference center, etc.).
  • Proven ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgment and initiative.
  • Must have excellent communications skills and be able to follow verbal and written instructions.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.
  • This position is considered essential and incumbent may be required to report to work during periods of inclement weather or other occasions when emergency leave is declared.
  • Some positions within this classification maybe required to work overtime and are subject to 24 hour emergency callback.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires considerable strenuous physical exertion, such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lawn mowing, and snow shoveling. Employee will be required to do walking, bending, and carrying of items up to 75 pounds in weight. Visual acuity is required to identify roof leaks, etc. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
