The President of Norfolk General Hospital is responsible for all strategic planning and operations of the entity and growing revenues while effectively managing expenses and maintaining high clinical quality. This individual is responsible for the development, implementation and overall success of the short-term and long-term goals, strategic objectives, policies, budgets and operating plans for the hospital. The President works with the team of leaders at Sentara, for strategic coordination of acute, post-acute, medical practices and the Optima Insurance products.

Key to the President role will be the development of authentic relationships with community leaders, physicians and additional key stakeholders.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The following represent essential functions and responsibilities of the President. They are not listed in any particular order of priority.
  • Initiates and participates in the development of marketing plans and strategies for both the hospital and system.
  • Ensures the provision of high quality services attracting both physicians and patients.
  • Manages the staff in accordance with the Sentara Healthcare operating philosophy. Establishes performance goals, position expectations, allocates labor resources and contributes to the development of human resource policies. Works to communicate and reinforce a vision for the hospital that emphasizes strong and effective physician relationships, the creation of new business opportunities, ensures dedication to customers, responsiveness to healthcare reform and changing reimbursement patterns.
  • Recommends and implements facility/product line improvement(s) to include construction and/or renovation of structures and/or purchase of new equipment as appropriate.
  • Recruits and retains high-performing employees and physicians by developing and maintaining satisfaction and engagement programs.
  • Fosters an internal culture of teamwork and integration that drives excellent service, quality, diversity of thought, an engaging work environment and overall performance improvement.
  • Communicates openly and effectively with a wide variety of individuals to ensure that needs are met and the organization's reputation is enhanced, while maintaining strict confidentiality when necessary.
  • Conducts all business engagements with the highest professionalism, honesty and integrity.
  • Implements and/or develops systems to monitor and ensure compliance with productivity standards, performance standards and position competencies.
  • Directs and participates in the development of an annual SNGH budget that supports the mission of the Hospital, the System, the commitment to patient care standards, and strategic initiatives.
  • Ensures accountability through the regular and systematic evaluation of overall operations. It is expected that the President will maintain a strong line of open communication with the EVP/COO and will participate in monthly operating reviews with the System's leadership.
  • Maintains compliance with laws, rules, and regulations governing hospitals and healthcare practitioners as well as the standards of accrediting bodies by monitoring operations and initiating charges where required.


Education Level
A graduate degree in business administration, healthcare administration, MD/DO or related field, is required and/or a combination of education and professional experience that provides this leader with the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the job.

▪ Seasoned and successful leader with experience in a competitive healthcare market. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years senior management experience in a large multi-hospital system. Prior experience working within a matrixed, operating company model is highly preferred.

▪ Successful track record of developing positive physician relationships with private practice, academic, and employed physicians, engaging key physicians in future plans and collaborating on clinical quality, service and program growth. An ability to work effectively with physician partners to gain their confidence, cooperation and trust.

▪ Demonstrated success mentoring executives and achieving results through team-based contributions. It is critical that candidates have comfort operating in a matrixed leadership model with dual reporting relationships locally and corporately.

▪ Solid business acumen, excellent decision-making, and system-experience are essential. Track record of successfully achieving significant and sustained improvement with a defined timeline.

▪ Extensive executive level experience creating and leading high-value organizations and creating innovative approaches to partnerships and affiliations.

▪ A proven track record in the areas of advancing and optimizing clinical quality, patient satisfaction and financial performance.

▪ Strong strategic thinking skills and an ability to translate strategy into action.

▪ A skillset that allows for the successful navigation and balance of System goals with local priorities.

▪ Skilled in community relations, engaging stakeholders and community partners, locally and regionally. Ability to engage civically and politically to benefit the hospital and the communities it serves.

▪ Prior experience and involvement within the community philanthropically is desirable.

Board Certification in ACHE preferred

▪ Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to listen effectively and be open to the ideas of others. Can present data and translate complex issues into comprehensible ideas in a concise and easily understood manner.

▪ A systems thinker with a bold vision who can connect the dots operationally in order to anticipate and manage the impact of transformational change.

Opportunities and Expectations for Leadership The following represent areas in which the President is expected to make significant progress within the first 18 to 24 months of her/his tenure. They are not listed in any particular order of significance.
  • Establish oneself as a highly accessible, responsive and knowledgeable executive with all collaborative partners in operational planning and decision-making such that the President becomes known as a facilitator, executor of strategy and a leader who makes things happen.
  • Work collaboratively with the Hospital and System leadership to drive improvements in operational effectiveness, productivity, efficiency, and clinical quality in key service lines. This includes, but is not limited to the Ear, Nose, and Throat, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Cardiac and Vascular, and Oncology service lines. The results of which will be measured by the attainment of top rankings by third parties, including CMS, U.S. News & World Report and Truven Analytics.
  • Cultivate a vibrant culture of accountability and high performance that leads to positive outcomes for patient experience, employee engagement, and cost containment. The President will mentor and develop a talented hospital leadership team to ensure clinical programmatic development and clinical outcome meet and exceed benchmarks.
  • Develop and implement operational plans that support care redesign and further integration, addressing access/capacity and staffing issues, and eliminating silos of care. The President will promote a culture that delivers services with a dedication to patient-centered care, streamlined and coordinated services and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure SNGH will continue to be viewed as a preeminent organization with top decile performance in care delivery. SNGH will be viewed as a beacon for the System in its offering of high quality, reliable and consistent healthcare delivery.
  • Advance Sentara's ongoing relationship with Eastern Virginia Medical School, supporting the tripartite mission, identifying and shepherding strategies that will appropriately position both organizations for future success. The President is 'the face' of Sentara to EVMS and will engage clinical chiefs to ensure continued meaningful progress with their affiliation agreement.
  • Further develop an environment that supports the highest levels of patient care quality, safety and satisfaction through measurement of comparative metrics and use of best practices. The President will be sure to advance the information flow to ensure smooth access to patients, service excellence and exemplary outcomes.
  • Demonstrate Sentara's commitment to the wealth of diversity reflected in its patients, its families, the workforce, and the communities it serves by identifying opportunities to continue to enhance the System's approach to diversity, inclusion and community engagement.
