Job Details

Under direct supervision of the classroom teacher, the incumbent is responsible for assisting in the implementation of lessons and activities, organizing classroom materials, enforcing school policies, adherence to medication schedules, and collection of data. The incumbent in this position is responsible for the supervision of the classroom staff and students and the continuation of instruction in the teacher’s absence. This position requires close supervision of students which includes the ability to keep up with running children and or to lift or assist with lifting students is essential to perform this task.  An important aspect of the job is gaining knowledge of and implementing the assigned student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and objectives as well as data collection and documentation of same.

This position is classified as non-exempt and in accordance with the Federal regulations is eligible for overtime pay for hours worked in excess of forty (40) hours per week.  Note:  Overtime must be pre-approved and time off from work either paid or unpaid is not considered in determining hours worked in a week.

Other Performance Measures:

Successful performance on the job requires following safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury to self or students, school dress standards, proper attendance and leave policies, and compliance with other policies set forth in the Employee Handbook.  Creativity, initiative and effective problem solving is also important to the success of the incumbent.

Examples of Essential Functions

  • Assume responsibility for leading classroom activities in the teacher’s absence.
  • Deliver and assist with instruction in support of the classroom teacher.
  • Help plan theme-related and vocational activities related to IEP goals and objectives under the direction of the assigned teacher.
  • Reinforce skills introduced by the teacher and provide instruction to student as prescribed by the teacher; may utilize games, stories or other activities to enhance learning skills.
  • Ensure medication procedures are followed in teachers or nurse’s absence, or when out in the community.
  • Assist in the classroom as Classroom Paraprofessional as needed. This essential function of this task requires that the incumbent be able to keep up with running children and or to lift or assist with lifting students.
  • Complete assigned paperwork and collect data as directed by the teacher; and prepare materials for class as needed.
  • Prepare IEP-related activities for individual students to aid in achieving IEP goals and objectives.
  • Collect, record and compile data using various methods including portfolios.
  • Report incidents to teachers and administration immediately; if the event involves the student’s safety, write or review incident report to ensure accuracy of facts.
  • Actively participate in the school swimming program, which includes wearing appropriate swimwear and assisting assigned student while in the water.
  • Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  • Assist student to master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
  • Dispense medication as indicated following training in teacher’s absence.
  • Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and community-based instruction; the ability to keep up with running children and or to lift or assist with lifting student is essential to perform this task.
  • Serve as role model in following all school policies and procedures and reinforce compliance with classroom staff; help foster a cooperative classroom environment.
  • Actively participates in the school swimming program, which includes wearing appropriate swimwear and assisting the assigned student while in the water.
  • Take responsibility for the physical environment of the classroom.
  • Attend weekly and special staff meetings and assume responsibility for the verbal and written information provided at such meetings; participate in weekly team meetings.
  • Attend required evening meetings outside the school day including Back-to-School Night and Mid-Year Parent Conferences.
  • The essential functions of this position as described herein require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, kneeling, crouching, crawling and brisk walking, and which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (45 lbs.).
  • Most tasks require oral communication, visual and hearing perception, and the ability to get around the classrooms, cafeteria, gym, campus, etc. 
  • Participate as a Committee Member on at least one School Committee.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work, and effectively attend to the needs of students with intellectual disabilities.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers as well as students and their family members, residential providers and significant others as needed.Ability to work with and lead classroom staff and small groups of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain required program records.
  • Ability to read, interpret and follow safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Successful completion of the required training courses within a specified period of time
  • Tuberculosis screening to assure no significant risk to the health and safety of others.
  • Successfully passing a criminal background investigation and pre-employment and random drug screenings.

Examples of Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of conflict resolution and positive behavior management techniques.
  • Some knowledge of Medicaid laws and compliance with such regulations.
  • Some knowledge of the legal rights of program participants.
  • Some knowledge of basic computer operation.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment, cell phones and personal computers.
  • Ability to apply principles to solve problems and deal with a variety of unpredictable situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence using English grammar and spelling.

Sensory Requirements

Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds.

Minimum Acceptable Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years’ experience working with children or adults with intellectual disabilities/autism.

7:50 AM to 3:10 PM – Monday

7:50 AM to 4:00 PM – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Many of these individuals, while unsuccessful in traditional work situations, are extremely gifted in other areas. The program is constantly evolving to meet the needs of each individual and to find outlets for his/her many talents.
