Public Health Planner

An Overview
Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is seeking a passionate, self-motivated candidate to join us as our Public Health Planner. This position will research and analyze public health best practices, design community engagement and empowerment initiatives, work with stakeholders to implement systems changes across sectors, and champion health equity initiatives both internally and externally. The Public Health Planner serves multiple roles as analyst, evaluator, advisor, and project manager. This position may have direct supervisory responsibility over grant-funded, temporary or part time staff, students and volunteers.

The Opportunity - Examples of Work
  • Researches public health best and promising practices; analyzes public health strategies, services, and resources in relation to defined goals and objectives;
  • Engages Alexandria residents, City agencies, and community partners in collaborative efforts to improve community health through evidence based changes in policies, systems and the environment;
  • Conceptualizes and manages various health equity projects based on local needs such as research studies and novel programs;
  • Develops and implements management and/or program evaluation plans, procedures, and methodology;
  • Collaborates with other members of the Population Health Team to design, implement and monitor all aspects of Community Health Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan process;
  • Provides substantive program guidance and technical assistance to various public, private, nonprofit health, and health-related agencies and organizations;
  • Advises partners on policy development, program planning, implementation, management and evaluation for a multitude of projects and programs;
  • Researches, writes, and manages grant applications that support AHD objectives
  • May supervise staff; may mentor and direct interns and volunteers;
  • Performs related work as required.

The Ideal Candidate
To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a Master of Public Health or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training and three years of experience in public health and/or community engagement, with an emphasis on project management, implementation, evaluation, and reporting and at least one year of experience working with a broad range of stakeholders and developing policy, systems and environmental changes to improve public health. Must be able and willing to provide reliable transportation for work purposes. Required to maintain a valid driver's license and adhere to Virginia Department of Health's driver safety policy. Reliable means of transportation to travel within the city for meetings and outreach events.

To be considered an ideal candidate one should have all the above minimum qualifications as well as, obtain experience with grant research and writing; familiarity working with culturally diverse populations; professional experience in running focus groups or performing qualitative data collection in a community setting.

Notes

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to driving record check, previous education and employment verification, and criminal background check.

Work is conducted in various environments, including outdoors. This position is required to work on
weekend days and evenings on a regular basis.
