This position is located in the OCC's Economics Department, Compliance Risk Analysis Division (CRAD) in Washington, DC.

As a Senior Financial Economist in this division, you will serve as a senior staff member with the responsibility for conducting and managing projects involving the application of economic analysis and research, developing tools, analysis, and reports to identify and evaluate compliance risks and a variety of consumer protection-related risks at financial institutions.

As a Senior Financial Economist you will:
  • Apply economic and statistical analysis and empirical methodologies to develop analytical tools to facilitate the Division's assessment of fair lending and BSA/AML risk at supervised institutions.
  • Conduct empirical analysis and write complex computer programs and code using sophisticated statistical software tools such as SAS or STATA, other quantitative analysis tools such as ArcGIS, programming languages such SQL Javascript, R, or Python.
  • Manipulate datasets, validate data integrity, organize new data in databases, and implement new databases to meet evolving analytical needs for Compliance RAD research, trend analysis, and consumer compliance related examination activities.
  • Review economic and related relevant literature, and incorporate financial analysis into broad, sophisticated, and complex economic studies, research initiatives, and other key Compliance RAD projects regarding consumer and compliance risks associated with fair lending (including mortgage lending) and Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering (BSA/AML) within financial and banking institutions.
  • Research and identify appropriate primary and secondary data and data sources, including information collected through the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA), US Census Bureau, Center for Disease Control, National Information Center, academic institutions, credit bureaus, and other entities, as well as financial and banking data associated with OCC supervisory activities. Develop reports and analysis of issues of data, trends and patterns observed in the data, and tools to increase the efficiency of using and analyzing such data.
  • Conduct presentations, training workshops and seminars summarizing the methods used to construct data and sample design for end-users, and for tools developed in-house.

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

  • Degree (Undergraduate and/or Graduate) in Economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus. OR
  • A combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Examples of qualifying experience include: a) individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation; b) supervisory or project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information; or c) teaching assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economics subjects and one of the following (1) personal research that produced evidence of results, (2) direction of graduate theses in economics, or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems.


In addition to meeting the BASIC REQUIREMENTS above, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the NB-V band level or GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position is:
  • Conducting and managing research projects and activities involving the application of economic, financial, and quantitative theories, principles and methods; and
  • Analyzing and interpreting data related to the banking and financial industry.

The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector, or through volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.

• Salary range includes 22.26% geographical pay.
