Open Rank Search in Education and Human Development focused on Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence

The George Mason University, College of Education and Human Development invites applications for Instructional Faculty. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.

Are you a deeply committed senior scholar with an action-oriented research agenda in this domain, yet you are in a context in which you feel profoundly constrained by bureaucratic, financial, or political obstacles? Or perhaps you are an aspiring young scholar whose great promise for making contributions in this domain is being thwarted by the unlucky timing of a "show-stopping" pandemic? If so, the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University - the largest public university in Virginia - may be the place for you. Mason faculty are empowered by an entrepreneurial culture that values and rewards "research of consequence" and professional impact.

Consistent with this culture, the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) has created a variety of policies and support mechanisms to facilitate innovation and flexibility within a strong collaborative framework, including a department-less structure with permeable boundaries and workload and incentive policies that respect the time required to conduct meaningful, high-impact research and scholarship while also maintaining excellence in teaching and professional service.

This open rank, multidisciplinary search for faculty who can serve as catalysts for transformative change through scientific and professional advancement is a manifestation of the vision of Mason's new president, Gregory Washington, to establish George Mason University as a "national exemplar of anti-racism and inclusive excellence in action." Those interested in a tenured or tenure-track position in one (or more) of the fields and disciplines represented within the CEHD context (cehd.gmu.edu) are invited to apply.

Of particular interest are scholars in academic specializations that have been particularly consequential contributors to Mason's accelerated rise to "Research 1" status (in 2016, faster than any university in the history of American higher education) - for example, special education, sport and recreation management, STEM education, literacy, educational psychology, kinesiology, and international education - as well as faculty in program areas that have been particularly consequential in enhancing Mason's reputation for professional impact in the National Capital region - for example, programs in teacher education, counseling, education leadership, athletic training, tourism and event management, and education policy.

Responsibilities: The primary focus of this search is on adding action-oriented research expertise and entrepreneurial energy that aligns with the College's commitment to its core values of social justice, innovation, and ethical leadership. In that spirit, applicants are expected to maintain an active line of research and external funding, with substantive themes that contribute to both our understanding and ability to take productive action to support the ideals of anti-racism and inclusive excellence. In addition, faculty will teach appropriate courses aligned with their academic and professional expertise; contribute to the development and delivery of online courses; and complete essential service activities (such as those related to student assessment and accreditation). Faculty are also expected to contribute to special initiatives designed to further the mission of the College and the University in areas related to anti-racism and inclusive excellence and to other areas of personal and professional interest.

Required Qualifications: All applicants must hold an earned doctorate in a substantively appropriate field of study. Those seeking a tenured position must have a distinguished publication record with demonstrated scholarly and professional impact; substantial involvement in externally funded research projects and/or service initiatives; an ongoing research program with evidence of mentorship of graduate students and junior faculty; and a record of versatile and effective teaching. Tenure-track applicants must manifest high promise for developing a profile of demonstrated research and teaching excellence with an initial trajectory toward this goal that is both accelerating and substantively compelling.

George Mason University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and as such is dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse faculty and staff. Individuals from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applications should be submitted online at http://jobs.gmu.edu for Position Number F5904z, and must include a letter of interest, current curriculum vita, and names of three references with contact information. Review of applications will begin on November 20, 2020 and continue throughout the 2020-2021 academic year as opportunities arise and funding is available.
