JOIN OUR NURSE VIRTUAL CHATS EACH THURSDAY FROM 2PM - 3PMSummary:The Lactation consultant educates women, families, health professionals, and the community about breast feeding and human lactation; facilitate the development of policies which protect, promote, and support breastfeeding; act as advocates for breastfeeding as the child-feeding norm; and provide holistic, evidence-based breastfeeding support and care from preconception to weaning for women and their families. Lactation consultants educate and support parents and families to encourage informed decision-making about infant and child feeding; utilize a pragmatic problem-solving approach, sensitive to the learner's culture, questions and concerns; provide anticipatory guidance to promote optimal breastfeeding practices and minimize the potential for breastfeeding problems or complications; provide positive feedback and emotional support for continued breastfeeding, especially in difficult or complicated circumstances; and share current evidence-based information and clinical skills in collaboration with other health care professionals. The lactation consultant is responsible for identifying and correcting lactation problems. May plan and lead breastfeeding classes for expecting mothers. Provides consultation services to lactating women on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Advises physicians and healthcare providers on lactation problems experienced by patients. The lactation consultant reports to the Nurse manager.Other information:Minimum five years of clinical experience of Maternity Nursing with Mother - Baby with knowledge of the breastfeeding dyad. Interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, patients, families, physicians, and the community. .Responsibilities:Facilitates, implements, and evaluates the Patient Plan of Care and Lactation Services with outcomes in collaboration with the health care team. Technical Skills-Latch and Positioning Assessment / Critical Thinking. Documents patient assessments accurately and correctly within the specified time in the patient's medical record and utilizing the electronic documentation software Assess patient safety facts and identifies those patients requiring specific safety interventions. Prompt evaluation of breastfeeding situations/complications. Educational needs of patient/family. Documents assessment on teaching form and modifies as needed. Educates staff and healthcare team on lactation (including policies).
