The AARP Foundation Research Unit is looking for an intern who is passionate about aging research. As an intern, you will apply your research design and methods skills to help plan and manage research projects that inform the AARP Foundation's innovation and program development work and support the achievement of the AARP Foundation's strategic objectives. We are committed to your growth and to cultivating your continued learning and development in research. The duration of this paid internship can be up to a year.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Contributing to the development of research plans
  • Creating and monitoring project management plans to ensure research tasks are executed as specified in the research plan
  • Contributing to the development of internal processes, tools, and resources to facilitate AARP Foundation staff access to and use of primary and secondary research
  • Compiling and organizing reports/findings from AARP Foundation led and supported research for inclusion in a knowledge management system
  • Conducting literature searches and reviews; conducting critical analyses of reviews and synthesizing and communicating findings
  • Conducting quantitative and qualitative data analyses and contributing to the write-up and visualization of results


Prospective interns must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university; be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students; and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship.

AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those who have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program.

Currently pursuing a degree with a major or minor/concentration in gerontology, research, public health, social sciences, behavioral sciences, or related discipline; preference will be given to candidates pursuing a graduate degree.
  • Knowledge of and experience with quantitative and qualitative research designs and methods
  • Experience applying research design and methods to the development of research plans is a plus
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with superior attention to detail
  • Ability to critically analyze and synthesize research
  • Experience using citation management software such as EndNote or Zotero is a plus
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize quantitative and qualitative data; experience using survey development platforms such as Dynata, quantitative and qualitative data analysis software such as SPSS and NVivo, and data visualization software is a plus
  • Creative initiative for the design and presentation of research results and creation of research resources
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to ensure effective interactions with individuals at all levels and backgrounds
  • Successful candidate will be dedicated to AARP Foundation's mission and will have a current understanding of the issues facing low income older adults and designing research about older adults and aging
