Policy, Research and International Affairs (PRI) serves AARP by leading the development and articulation of AARP's public policies, research and insights on the 50+ and issues that matter to them, importing best global practices, and strengthening AARP's reputation for world class expertise and thought leadership.


Are you a graduate student passionate about communications that helps amplify policy, research, and thought leadership - in the U.S. and globally? AARP's Policy, Research and International (PRI) seeks an intern who can demonstrate strong communications and writing skills for traditional and social communications and wants to learn more about applying those skills to policy solutions, research insights, and changing the global conversation about aging.

The intern will work in AARP Policy, Research and International ("PRI"), supporting communications and other projects in the office of the Chief Public Policy Officer. This position reports to the Director, Communications Integration for PRI, and will work with a team of talented communications professionals - as well as interact with policy and research thought leaders across the organization.

As an intern, you will apply analytical and creative thinking to help with communications and social media activities that promote our compelling research, policy solutions, insights, and global thought leadership on people 50-plus and their families. The duration of this internship can be up to a year.


External Communications:
Provide social media support, create compelling content to amplify external releases, events, and other opportunities, create event social media toolkits, work with other social media team members and with supervision, and create sample tweets to promote content.
  • Support creation of video content, including working with Outreach Director to identify stock photos, conduct video research, coordinate studio and field shoots, develop run of shows, manage spreadsheet metrics, displays an overall curiosity of how effective storytelling and public policy drives social change.
  • Support the development and implementation of impactful virtual and in-person events.,

Internal Communications
  • Draft internal communications content (newsletters, emails, SharePoint content) key to helping PRI effectively communicate with its teams and across AARP.

Executive Communications
  • Support AARP's Chief Public Policy Officer's communications, including preparation for speaking engagements, developing PPTs, social content, and briefing materials.

Special projects as assigned.

The ideal candidate will be highly organized, understand pressing deadlines, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and enjoy working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.


Prospective intern must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university; and be a graduate student, or post doctorate student.

AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.

Those majoring in communications, public relations or journalism are encouraged to apply. Submission of writing samples (school paper articles and clippings preferred) may be required. Skills include: Microsoft applications, Adobe. Design skills a plus.
