Duties

Summary

This position is located in the Education Unit (EU), National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), Smithsonian Institution (SI). The employee researches, develops, writes, and produces online and print educational materials for K-12 teachers and students in Native Knowledge 360°, the museum's national effort to challenge common assumptions and practices and to provide educators and students with new ways of teaching and learning about Native American history and cultures.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for development and delivery of teacher professional development programs in a variety of settings and formats; develops and implements of strategies and materials for growth, sustainment, and national outreach of the Native Knowledge 360° initiative, to include multimedia online lessons with interactive components, storyboards for videos and narrated slide shows, student activities using primary resources, interpretive text, student worksheets, teaching posters, teacher guides, and lesson plans for teachers.
  • Coordinates and collaborates closely with the Education Unit and several other NMAI departments to research, write, and produce materials and to set and meet production schedules; manages a product development team (including regional contributors, educators, and SME's); and ensures project timelines and concise feedback and instructions for educational product team members, including museum staff and external contractors and partners.
  • Writes and edits Education Unit materials, including project reports and grant applications. Interprets program requirements and criteria to obtain grants; works closely with them in the planning and development of their proposals. Monitors each product through all phases of development and production to completion. Provides professional and policy advice and assistance to grant applicants and to ongoing grant projects.
  • Develops new procedures for treating a demonstration of unusual or unique products or practices in actual school situations. Ensures that education products have appropriate content reviews and Museum approvals. Collaborates with project evaluators and assists with product testing and evaluation planning and implementation for completed products as well as those under development providing technical assistance as needed.

You must meet these Basic Education Requirements:

  • Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.

    or
  • Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.

  • In addition to the Basic Requirements above you must have the following:

    Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as researching, writing, and producing educational material for students and teachers, K-12 in a museum, educational, or equivalent institution; planning, executing and evaluating educational programs for teachers and students; and working within and setting budgets for programs and materials development.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

    There is no education substitution at the GS-12 level.
