Summary

Are you an experienced Engineering Technician? Do you want to join the modern space age? NASA Goddard Space Flight Center seeks an Industrial Specialist for our Advanced Manufacturing Branch in the Mechanical Systems Division in Greenbelt, MD. In this position, you will support the design, analysis, fabrication, and assembly of scientific instruments and spacecraft for ground-based, suborbital and orbital science and exploration missions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advice/guidance on space flight production operations; evaluate incoming designs to ensure documents are technically adequate before release for manufacturing.
  • Review/prepare processes and material specifications that ensure control of items such as machining, welding, heat treating, surface finishing, plating, bonding, and other industrial manufacturing operations.
  • Ensure flight hardware meets contract requirements, complies with quality control systems, and is properly replaced/corrected when inspection processes are implemented.
  • Keep flight project customers well informed of quotations, fabrications, assembles, and secondary and inspection processes.
  • Monitor work assigned to contract employees; inform the Contracting Officer Representative of task status and contractor performance.
  • Represent the Branch during periodic status reviews with Space Flight project managers. Develop data and present status for manufacturing/assembly. Provide updates at Branch status meetings.
  • Assess facility and equipment obstacles and find solutions to challenging issues such as production process problems that involve extremely close tolerances with little margin for error.

Qualifications

In addition to basic education requirements, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-10), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-11:

Specialized experience includes duties such as; space flight (or equivalent) manufacturing work that involves fabrication, assembly, applications, properties, operations, and limitations of engineering systems, processes, structures, machinery, devices, and materials; evaluation of technical drawings for manufacturability while developing procedures, methods and approaches to solve unusual manufacturing issues; participating in company assessments and assisting to develop recommendations to Contracting Officers about future contract awards; developing some or all technical findings and recommendations, assisting with briefings, project papers and correspondence that supports understanding and acceptance

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
